About Cognosco Learning
An education, consulting, and publishing firm — empowering organizations by empowering their people since 2002.
Cognosco Learning is an education, consulting, and publishing firm founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 2002. We develop people through live, in-person learning and consulting, and we remain on the cutting edge of educational technology, leveraging artificial intelligence in the service of learning. Today, Cognosco is a hybrid company — a traditional learning and consulting firm, and an artificial intelligence company developing coursework in the AI space.
Our conviction is simple: we empower organizations by empowering their people at the deepest level. Companies don't think, decide, or change — people do. So rather than working on an organization from the outside in, we work with the people inside it: how they think, how they communicate, how they lead, and how they rise to the work in front of them. When people grow at that depth, the organization grows with them — in performance, in culture, and in results that hold.
That is why we understand before we advise. No two companies are alike, and no guidance is worth much without knowing your people — their strengths, their blind spots, and the real challenges they face every day. From that understanding we bring fresh, practical ideas and honest counsel, and we stand beside you as coach and partner while those ideas become capability. The outcome of that work has a name: human effectiveness — people performing at the level their roles, and their organizations, actually require.
Our Signature Series carries the same conviction into the AI age. Each course begins as a deliberately authored book — real curriculum, written to be taught — and is delivered two ways: live, in person, and one learner at a time by the Lighthouse Coach, our agentic AI Socratic coach, which questions, diagnoses, and guides the way a great human coach does. Two ways of learning, one mission: people empowered at the deepest level, and organizations stronger for it.
The Two Sigma Problem
In 1984, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom reported a striking result: students who learned one-on-one with a tutor, under a mastery-learning discipline, performed about two standard deviations above students taught conventionally. The average tutored student outperformed roughly 98 percent of the classroom group. Bloom called the challenge of reproducing that result the “two sigma problem”: the method worked, but one expert tutor for every learner was too costly and impractical to scale.
That problem is the design standard behind the Lighthouse Coach. It works Socratically, one learner at a time, questioning and diagnosing rather than simply presenting information. It does not advance a learner merely because time has passed; the learner must explain, apply, and prove each idea. Mastery is the standard.
Bloom’s figures belong to Bloom’s research, not to our catalog. We cite them because they name the standard honest learning should aim for — not because Cognosco claims its courses have been measured at two sigma.

The Lighthouse: Our Guiding Light
Our logo is Boston Light, the lighthouse in Boston Harbor — the oldest lighthouse in the United States. First lit in 1716, it guided ships safely into Boston for generations; destroyed during the Revolution, it was rebuilt in 1783 and has stood watch over the harbor ever since. Because its light meant safe passage, Boston Harbor became a thriving center of commerce — a place of safe harbor, opportunity, and possibility.
That is exactly what a lighthouse means to us. Light is knowledge. Light is education. A lighthouse doesn't sail the ship for you — it shows you the way, warns you off the rocks, and guides you home. At Cognosco Learning, we strive to be that guiding light for the people and organizations we serve: illuminating challenges, revealing the course ahead, and helping our clients navigate their way to safe harbor and new possibility.
Our name says the same thing. Cognosco is Latin — to examine, to inquire, to learn. We examine where you are, we inquire into where you want to go, and we help you learn your way there. Like Boston Light, we have one mission: to be the beacon by which you navigate your own course.
