Accounting & Bookkeeping Essentials

Signature Course No. 143 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Accounting & Bookkeeping Essentials course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This course is for bookkeepers and office managers who keep a small business's records day to day, owners and founders who sign what the books produce, administrative and finance assistants moving into bookkeeping responsibility, and anyone preparing to use bookkeeping software seriously — who wants to understand what the program is doing underneath, so its output can be checked instead of merely believed.

It works in the order a keeper actually works: first, Module 1 — The Record Itself: Equation, Entry, Journal, Ledger — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with Open the March Books; then, Module 2 — The Cycles, the Adjustments, and the Statements — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with Close March and Produce the Statements.

You finish by proving the whole course — in Open the March Books and in Close March and Produce the Statements. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Explaining an entry, defending a balance, and walking an owner through a month-end are spoken acts, and the course treats them that way.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

You learn on one business, for one full month: Sorrel & Stone Kitchen Supply Co., whose complete March books you open, record, adjust, close, and turn into statements. Every figure in the course can be traced back to an entry and checked with a pencil — if a number appears, you can rebuild it. That is not a burden the course places on you. It is the habit the course exists to build.

The course teaches the recording discipline itself — the equation, double entry, journals, ledgers, adjustments, closing, and statements — in a form that holds whatever program, app, or ledger book your business uses, so you can check any tool's output instead of merely believing it.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — the complete March books through the unadjusted trial balance, and the finished month itself: verified balances, the bank reconciliation, the closing entries, and an income statement and a balance sheet that reconcile to each other — written to be usable on the real job, not just filed in the course.

This is the one hundred and forty-third course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the accounting equation. Given any two sides, can you produce the third — and given any event, can you name the move it makes? Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — Open the March Books for Module 1 and Close March and Produce the Statements for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every business runs twice: once in the world — goods moving, people working, money changing hands — and once in its books. When the second run is faithful, the books become the business's memory: what it owns, what it owes, who owes it, what the month actually earned, and whether the cash in the bank is the cash the records promised.

When the second run is sloppy, everything built on it is guesswork wearing a uniform — the tax return, the loan application, the owner's own decisions. This course teaches you to keep the second run faithful.

You will learn the accounting equation that every set of books must obey, the double-entry method that enforces it transaction by transaction, the chart of accounts that gives every kind of event a home, and the journal-to-ledger routine that turns a month of source documents into account balances you can prove.

Then you will work the cycles every keeper works: selling on account and collecting, buying on account and paying, counting inventory, running payroll, reconciling the bank, adjusting at period end, closing the books, and producing an income statement and a balance sheet from the books themselves — not from memory, not from the bank balance, but from a trial balance that ties.

What you will learn

  • Use the accounting equation and double entry to record any ordinary business transaction so the books stay in balance
  • Build and use a chart of accounts, a journal, and a ledger — evidence first, in time order, posted to accounts
  • Record the receivables, payables, inventory, and payroll cycles completely, including returns, withholdings, and employer costs
  • Prove the books: reconcile cash, build trial balances, find and correct errors, and state what each proof cannot show
  • Adjust and close a period: accruals, deferrals, depreciation, supplies, closing entries, and the post-closing proof
  • Produce an income statement and a balance sheet from the books that reconcile to each other

Who It's For

Built for the person whose signature goes on the books

Accounting & Bookkeeping Essentials is for bookkeepers and office managers — who keep the records of a small business day to day and need the routine to be right, provable, and finished on time, owners and founders — who sign what the books produce and want to know, from the inside, whether the record under their signature deserves it, administrative and finance assistants — moving into bookkeeping responsibility and needing the whole discipline, in order, on one real set of books,

and anyone preparing to use bookkeeping software seriously — who wants to understand what the program is doing underneath, so its output can be checked instead of merely believed.

Every balance in this course has a birthplace: an opening balance plus the entries posted to it. You will rebuild balances from their entries until the rebuilding is a reflex — because a keeper who cannot re-add a balance cannot tell when it is wrong.

This is a Sales, Service & Revenue course. It assumes comfort with arithmetic and ordinary business documents — invoices, bills, pay stubs, bank statements. It assumes no accounting degree and no prior bookkeeping experience. If you can add a column and read a bill, you have everything this course requires to start.

Every proof in the course is paired with the error it cannot catch. A balanced entry proves the entry is complete, not that it is right; a trial balance proves debits equal credits, not that no transaction is missing. You will learn to state what each proof cannot show — because a keeper who knows what her proofs cannot do is the only kind whose proofs mean anything.
