Advanced Machine Learning
Signature Course No. 219 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Advanced Machine Learning course, in the AI at Work category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
A survey teaches you to recognize machine learning. This course teaches you to reason about it when recognition is not enough: when two strong models disagree, when a fitting run stalls for no obvious reason, when a single score turns out to mean three different things, and when the elegant model loses to the plain one and nobody can say why.
You take the mechanics apart. Error decomposed into bias, variance, and noise; regularization as shrinkage with a stated belief behind it; optimization worked by hand and then at scale; and the great mechanisms — margins and kernels, bagging, boosting, probabilistic models, embeddings — each stated as a bet about shape, noise, and what will stay stable.
Then you learn how far to believe them. Deep networks and their signal path, sequences and attention, generative mechanics, calibration tested bin by bin, metrics that respect imbalance and real costs, validation that cannot leak, and tuning policed against self-deception.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Mechanics of Learning: Objectives, Optimization, and Model Families — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Advanced Model Review; then, Module 2 — Depth, Uncertainty, and Judgment: Sequences, Generative Mechanics, and Honest Evaluation — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Model Decision Dossier.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Advanced Model Review, a written audit of a vendor's stock-out proposal for a pharmacy chain, dismantled mechanism by mechanism and closed with a funding verdict; and The Model Decision Dossier, a validated, costed, bounded recommendation on a bank's loan-review model, signed with its reversal conditions.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. This course teaches mechanics at capability level and names no product, library, or platform as the way to do anything. No benchmark result, leaderboard figure, or measured effect size is stated as a finding, and every worked figure is invented scenario data with its inputs printed so you can recompute it.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Advanced Machine Learning is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. When a model is wrong on new data, "it is wrong" is not a diagnosis — it is a symptom, and the course's first concept turns it into three separate problems with three separate remedies. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Advanced Model Review for Module 1 and The Model Decision Dossier for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Objective before architecture. Every method is introduced the same way: what objective it optimizes, what optimizer moves it, and what it assumes about the world. A model family is a bet — and the practitioner who can state the bet can also state when to fold it.
Module 1 teaches the mechanics. Error decomposition, regularization, optimization at two depths, and the kernel, ensemble, probabilistic, and representation mechanisms taken apart at worked depth.
Module 2 teaches judgment. Deep, sequence, and generative mechanics, then the earning process: calibration, cost-aware metrics, leakage-free validation, slice-level error analysis, and tuning without self-deception.
And complexity must pay rent. Every added capacity, stage, and tuned setting must buy measurable, honestly estimated improvement over the simpler alternative — after the cost of searching for it is counted.
What you will learn
- Decompose error into bias, variance, and noise, and choose capacity and regularization as deliberate bets
- Reason about optimization — curvature, step size, momentum, stochastic updates, and schedules — and diagnose why a fitting run failed
- Explain kernel, ensemble, probabilistic, deep, sequence, and generative mechanics at worked depth, including what each assumes and where each breaks
- Quantify uncertainty, design leakage-free validation, choose cost-aware metrics, tune without self-deception, and sign a bounded recommendation
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Advanced Machine Learning, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Advanced Model Review and The Model Decision Dossier
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for people whose models carry real weight
Practitioners who finished the survey and hit its ceiling — data scientists and analysts whose models now carry real money, real patients, real freight, or real people, and who need depth, not another tour.
Engineers moving into modeling responsibility — software and data engineers who already build pipelines and now must judge the models those pipelines feed.
Technical managers, reviewers, researchers, and advanced students — who must approve, fund, or refuse modeling work, and who want the worked, decision-level treatment of methods they may know as theorems, tested on workplace cases. The course assumes the survey course's concepts, comfort with algebra and basic probability, and no particular software environment.
