Body Language: Read the Room
Signature Course No. 192 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Body Language: Read the Room course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for managers and team leads who run meetings and deliver difficult news — for consultants, advisers, and client-facing professionals who must adjust in the moment, not in the debrief — for salespeople, negotiators, and presenters who need to tell a performed agreement from an answered objection — and for anyone who hires, interviews, or sits on panels, who must learn which snap readings deserve trust and which must be set aside and checked.
It works in the order the craft is built: first, Module 1 — See Clearly Before You Conclude — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Observation Record; then, Module 2 — Correct, Question, Verify — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Room-Read and Verification Plan.
Observation here is a disciplined craft, not mind-reading. You baseline a person before you interpret anything, you read clusters instead of single cues, you prize change from baseline above every static pose, and you treat every reading you form as a hypothesis to be checked in words — because a reading is the start of a better question, never the end of an inquiry.
One running workplace carries the teaching: Trueline Advisory, a small consultancy led in these pages by senior consultant Robin Ellery, with colleagues Dev Adebayo, Marta Kline, Helen Cho, and Peter Lind — so you learn to read the same people across many rooms, the way you would learn colleagues of your own.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Observation Record and in The Room-Read and Verification Plan. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a disciplined observation record of a single meeting, with inferences labelled and refused readings listed, and a full room-read and verification plan for a high-stakes meeting, with its checks scripted and its decisions attached — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and ninety-second course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the baseline. No gesture means anything until you know what the person does when nothing is at stake. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Observation Record for Module 1 and The Room-Read and Verification Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every meeting runs on two channels at once. One is the words: the proposal, the objection, the question, the agreement. The other is everything else people do while those words are spoken — where they look, how they sit, when they go quiet, how their voice changes, whether the room leans in or leans away. Most professionals listen only to the first channel and then wonder why a meeting that sounded agreed ended in nothing.
This course teaches you to work the second channel with discipline. You will learn to establish a baseline before you interpret anything, to read clusters instead of single cues, to weigh congruence between words and body, to notice change from baseline as the most informative signal of all, and to correct every reading for context, culture, and the individual in front of you.
Above all, you will learn the limits of the craft and the move that redeems it: verification in words. A reading is the start of a better question, never the end of an inquiry — and the course holds that line in every concept, including its honest account of folklore claims and of what bodies cannot tell you about deception.
What you will learn
- Baseline a person before reading them, and read change from baseline instead of gestures in isolation
- Read clusters, congruence, and context together rather than single cues
- Read the main channels — face, voice, posture, space, hands — with their limits stated for each
- Correct your readings for culture, individual difference, health, and habit
- Recognise folklore and unsupported claims about body language, including claims about spotting lies, and set them aside
- Read groups and meetings, not just individuals, including how status shapes what bodies do
- Turn a nonverbal reading into a respectful spoken check that confirms or corrects it

Built for the person who has to read the room
Body Language: Read the Room is for managers and team leads — who run meetings, deliver difficult news, and need to know whether the room is with them, lost, or holding something back, consultants, advisers, and client-facing professionals — whose work happens across a table from people deciding whether to trust them,
salespeople, negotiators, and presenters — who need to tell the difference between an objection that has been answered and an agreement that has merely been performed — and anyone who hires, interviews, or sits on panels, who must learn which snap readings deserve trust and which must be set aside and checked.
Every reading in the course is held as a hypothesis and proven on a fresh situation: baselined, clustered, corrected for the room and the person, and verified in words before it is acted on.
This is a Communication & Influence course. It assumes no background in psychology and teaches no clinical method. It assumes you spend your working life in rooms — physical and on screen — with other people.
