Business Analytics in Practice
Signature Course No. 147 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Business Analytics in Practice course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for managers who commission analysis and have to decide what to do with it on Monday — for analysts and individual contributors whose findings other people bet budgets, staffing, and strategy on, for owners and founders reading their own business in its operating numbers, and for operators moving into data-facing roles.
It works on one running business, end to end. You learn Mossfern Home & Garden whole — twelve stores and an online shop, one complete operating picture for the year just ended — and every variance, segment cut, cohort, forecast, and experiment read in the course is built from those same figures, so you can check any number in the course against its source with a pencil.
Module 1 takes you from question to finding: From Question to Finding — Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Decision Brief. Module 2 takes you from finding to decision, and back: From Finding to Decision, and Back — Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Full Cycle.
An analysis is not finished when the chart is drawn. It is finished when a decision has been made, acted on, and measured. You learn the whole cycle as one discipline: frame the decision before you touch the data, audit the data before you trust the analysis, read the result without fooling yourself, present it so a decision follows, and go back afterward to measure whether the decision worked.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.
Every figure chains to the others. The variance bridge reconciles the target operating income to the actual operating income to the dollar, the forecast starts from the actuals, and the experiment read prices its own result — if a number appears late in the course, you can trace it back and check it yourself.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete decision brief on Mossfern's year that an owner could act on Monday, and a full-cycle decision pack on a live promotion decision, framed, forecast, tested, presented, and set up to be measured — written to be usable on the real job, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and forty-seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the decision itself. Data does not answer questions — people frame questions, choose evidence, and read results, and every one of those human steps can go wrong before the arithmetic starts. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Decision Brief for Module 1 and The Full Cycle for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every business is drowning in numbers and starving for decisions. The systems record everything: every sale, every visit, every return, every shift.
What they do not record is what any of it means — which numbers answer the question actually on the table, which are measuring the wrong thing beautifully, and which finding is strong enough to bet money, people, or a season on.
This course teaches the applied analytics cycle inside a real business: how to frame a decision question so data can answer it, how to find the data and audit it before trusting it, how to choose an analysis that fits the question, how to read results without fooling yourself, how segmentation and cohort thinking reveal what averages hide, how forecasting and experiments work at practitioner depth, how to present an analysis so a decision actually follows, and how to measure, afterward, whether the decision worked.
It is deliberately tool-neutral: no product is named as a method anywhere in these pages, because the cycle survives every tool change and the habits are the skill.
What you will learn
- Frame a business decision as a question data can actually answer
- Find the data behind a question, and audit it — source, definition, and completeness — before trusting it
- Choose an analysis that fits the question, and read results without fooling yourself
- Explain performance against target with a variance bridge that reconciles to the dollar
- Use segmentation and cohort analysis to find what the averages hide
- Forecast in practice, and read experiments and comparisons at practitioner depth
- Present analysis so a decision follows — and measure afterward whether the decision worked
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Business Analytics in Practice, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Decision Brief and The Full Cycle
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the person who has to decide what the numbers mean
Business Analytics in Practice is for managers who commission analysis, sit through its presentations, and have to decide what to do with it on Monday, analysts and individual contributors whose findings other people bet budgets, staffing, and strategy on, and who need those findings to deserve the bet,
owners and founders who must read their own business in its operating numbers before a hard quarter reads it for them, and operators moving into data-facing roles — team leads, planners, merchandisers, service managers — who already make decisions with analytical consequences and want to make them on evidence.
This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course. It assumes no particular software, because it teaches none: if you can read a table, compute a percentage, and explain a chart in plain words, you have everything this course requires to start.
