English That Opens Doors
Signature Course No. 107 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's English That Opens Doors course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for professionals working in English as an additional language who lose in meetings and inboxes some of the authority they have in their own language, native English speakers on international teams whose speed, idioms, and shortcuts are half the misunderstanding in the room, managers and team leads running multinational teams, client-facing professionals whose emails, presentations, and negotiations carry the company's credibility, and anyone preparing for a bigger role in English.
It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — Being Understood: Clarity in Every Direction — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Week the Project Nearly Slipped; then, Module 2 — Being Persuasive and Trusted: Weight, Warmth, and Repair at Full Strength — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with Your Business-English Field Guide.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Week the Project Nearly Slipped and in Your Business-English Field Guide. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.
In this course the Voice Coach is not an extra — spoken practice is the point. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Global English belongs to the people who use it. A strong accent is not an error. It is a biography.
This course never treats it as a defect, never tries to remove it, and never measures a learner against a native speaker. The goal is narrower, harder, and more useful: to be understood first time, to be trusted, and to sound like yourself on a good day. This is not a grammar course, and it is not examination English.
Grammar appears in these pages only where it changes meaning or credibility in a business document — where a tense choice tells a client the wrong date, where a missing article changes nothing and is therefore left alone, where a modal verb turns a firm commitment into a vague hope.
No first language is singled out as a problem, no learner's home language is treated as interference to be ashamed of, and no real company, client, or colleague appears anywhere. There is no secret native code to be initiated into. There is a shared professional practice, and it can be learned.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a failed week of international work audited, repaired, and converted into standing rules, and your own business-English field guide — your model emails, your personal phrase bank, and your repair lines, written for your real job and ready to use the next working day — not just ideas about English.
This is the one hundred and seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the sentence. Being understood is not a talent and it is not an accent — it is a craft of short sentences, chosen words, and checked meaning. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Week the Project Nearly Slipped for Module 1 and Your Business-English Field Guide for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most international work now runs on English that belongs to no single country: a project call joins colleagues in São Paulo, Warsaw, Bangalore, and Toronto; a proposal written in Seoul is read in Amsterdam; a difficult negotiation is held, politely and precisely, between two people neither of whom is speaking their first language.
This course teaches that English — business English as clarity, courtesy, and confidence in real work situations. You will learn to write emails that get answered because the ask is unmistakable, to follow meetings and be followed in them, to present with a structure listeners can hold onto, to disagree firmly without giving offence, to build relationships through small talk that is small in size and large in effect, to write reports and proposals that carry weight, and — when misunderstanding happens, as it always does — to repair it quickly, gracefully, and without blame.
Throughout, the discipline is plain English: short sentences, chosen words, one idea at a time, and the courage to check that you were understood rather than the hope that you were. Nothing here asks you to hide where you come from. Everything here helps you be heard for what you know.

Built for the person working across borders
English That Opens Doors is for professionals working in English as an additional language — competent in their field, roughly intermediate in English or beyond, who lose in meetings and inboxes some of the authority they have in their own language, native English speakers on international teams — whose speed, idioms, and shortcuts are half the misunderstanding in the room, managers and team leads running multinational teams — who chair the calls, write the summaries, and set the tone, client-facing professionals — consultants, salespeople, support leads, and project managers whose emails, presentations,
and negotiations carry the company's credibility in every sentence, and anyone preparing for a bigger role in English — a promotion, a transfer, a global assignment.
Global English belongs to the people who use it. A strong accent is not an error. It is a biography.
This course never treats it as a defect, never tries to remove it, and never measures a learner against a native speaker. This is not a grammar course, and it is not examination English. No first language is singled out as a problem, no learner's home language is treated as interference to be ashamed of, and no real company, client, or colleague appears anywhere.
This is a Communication & Influence course and it assumes roughly intermediate English — you can already do your job in English, with effort — and a real job conducted at least partly in English, so every practice in the book has somewhere true to land.
It assumes nothing else: no earlier Signature Course, no particular first language, and no ambition to sound like anyone but yourself.
