Business Foundations: The MBA Essentials

Signature Course No. 136 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Business Foundations: The MBA Essentials course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for managers and team leads who own a slice of a business and are increasingly asked questions that cross the slice's border — budget, hiring, pricing, capacity, customers — for specialists moving toward general management, for owners and founders who integrate their own businesses, and for professionals considering an MBA who want the core map first.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Seeing the Whole Business — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Whole-Business Read; then, Module 2 — Leading the Whole Business — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Integrated Plan.

One business carries the whole course. You will meet Aldergrove Kitchen Co., a maker of modular kitchen storage, and its general manager, Renata Voss — and you will read it, price its decisions, follow its flow, lead its people, and plan its next year, on the same figures from the first module to the last.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Whole-Business Read and in The Integrated Plan. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Recommending a strategy, defending a price, and questioning a dashboard are spoken acts, and this course treats them that way.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Every number in the course can be checked by hand. The running company's figures are stated once and never change, the worked examples show their arithmetic, and every decision you practice is priced from figures in front of you — contribution, break-even, working capital, and margin of safety, computed, not asserted.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a whole-business read of Aldergrove with a recommendation a board could act on, and an integrated business plan for its next year, sequenced, priced, funded, and defended in writing — written to be usable on the real job, not just in the course.

This is the one hundred and thirty-sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the whole business at once. A business fails between its disciplines more often than inside them. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Whole-Business Read for Module 1 and The Integrated Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

An MBA is not a set of subjects. It is a way of seeing: the trained habit of looking at one business and seeing, simultaneously, the market it competes in, the customers it serves, the money it makes and burns, the operations that produce its promises, the people who must carry its plans, and the evidence that separates what it knows from what it hopes.

This course builds that way of seeing for professionals who do the work of management without the degree. You will learn the core logic of strategy — where to compete and how to win there; of marketing — whose problem you solve and why they should choose you; of finance — how to read profit, cash, and position, and how to price a decision before you make it.

Of operations — how work flows, where it jams, and what quality costs when it fails; of organizational behavior — why people do what they do inside structures someone designed; and of analytics — how to turn data into evidence and evidence into a decision.

Then you will put the disciplines to work together: executing a strategy, managing cash, scaling a supply chain, leading change, running experiments, negotiating agreements, guarding the business against its own risks, and growing it without breaking it. The course ends where general management actually lives: in integrative judgment, the ability to hear six competent specialists give six different answers and produce one decision the whole business can carry.

What you will learn

  • Read a whole business at once and assign any question to the discipline that owns it
  • Make strategy choices: where to compete, for whom, and on what advantage
  • Read profit, cash, and position, and price decisions with unit economics and break-even
  • See operations as flow: capacity, bottlenecks, and the cost of poor quality
  • Lead people through motivation, structure, change, and honest negotiation
  • Use metrics and experiments as evidence, and guard decisions against bias and risk
  • Integrate the disciplines into one defensible business decision, in writing

Who It's For

Built for the manager whose questions cross the border

Business Foundations: The MBA Essentials is for managers and team leads who own a slice of a business and are increasingly asked questions that cross the slice's border, specialists moving toward general management — engineers, accountants, marketers, operators — whose depth is proven and whose breadth is now the gap,

owners and founders who are, whether they chose it or not, the integrators of their own businesses, and professionals considering an MBA who want the core map first: what the disciplines are, how they think, and where their own curiosity and weakness actually lie.

This is a Leadership & Management course. It assumes experience of work, not of business school. It assumes no accounting, no statistics, and no economics beyond what daily professional life supplies; every tool it uses is built here, in plain language, on one company you will come to know well.
