Business Strategy in Practice

Signature Course No. 182 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Business Strategy in Practice course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for senior managers and general managers who own a business unit's results and must defend a direction to a board, a budget holder, or their own team — for strategy, planning, and chief-of-staff roles whose work is the analysis itself, for founders and owners who are the strategy function in their firm, and for leaders moving from functional to general responsibility.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Reading the Competitive Ground — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Strategic Appraisal; then, Module 2 — Choosing and Landing the Strategy — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Chosen Strategy, Translated.

One company carries the worked numbers. You will meet Verdan Toolworks, a fictional maker of professional cutting and abrasive accessories, with its market, its rivals, its product lines, and its margins stated in full — and every later figure in the course recomputes from that same spine, from the first concept to the final capstone.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Strategic Appraisal and in The Chosen Strategy, Translated. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Defending an industry read, arguing a position, and presenting a scenario plan are spoken acts, and this course treats them that way.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Every number in the course can be checked by hand. Verdan's figures are stated once and held constant, its market shares sum to the whole market, and its line margins rebuild the company margin exactly — so you can recompute each restatement against the running company's stated facts with a pencil.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a strategic appraisal of Verdan Toolworks ending in moves a board could act on, and a chosen, translated strategy for the same company under changed conditions, defended in writing — written to be usable on the real job, not just in the course.

This is the one hundred and eighty-second course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the standard itself. You cannot choose well in a market you have not read honestly. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Strategic Appraisal for Module 1 and The Chosen Strategy, Translated for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Most strategy teaching fails in one of two directions. The first is slogans — sentences that sound like strategy and decide nothing. The second is the museum tour — framework after framework, each admired, none used, until the learner owns a vocabulary and no judgment. This course refuses both.

Strategy, as taught here, is a small set of consequential choices — where to compete, how to win there, what to build, what to refuse — made on evidence, expressed so other people can act on them, and reviewed against what actually happens.

First you learn to see: what strategy is and is not, how industry structure presses on every firm inside it, who the competitors and buyers really are, where value is created and captured inside a firm, which resources can carry an advantage and which cannot, and how to turn an honest appraisal into moves instead of a list.

Then you learn to choose: a position in the market, a portfolio of businesses and products, a direction of growth, a business model that makes money on purpose, a value curve that escapes head-on rivalry, a plan that survives more than one future, and a disciplined way to judge options against each other.

Finally you learn to land it: how to read the numbers a strategy stands on, how industries change under your feet, where the firm's boundaries should sit, how a strategy is translated into objectives and measures other people can run, and how execution is reviewed and adapted without quietly abandoning the choice that was made. Every concept is worked on cases, and the skill being built is recognition — seeing which tool a new situation is asking for before anyone labels it for you.

What you will learn

  • State what strategy is — a set of choices with trade-offs — and test any plan against that standard
  • Analyse an industry's structure and profit pressure with the five forces, and state what the analysis cannot tell you
  • Map a firm's value chain and locate where margin is created, spent, and lost
  • Appraise a firm honestly: resources and capabilities against VRIO, external evidence through SWOT into TOWS moves
  • Choose a competitive position, judge a portfolio of lines or businesses, and pick a growth vector with its risk stated
  • Analyse and redesign a business model, and design value innovation that escapes direct rivalry
  • Build scenarios, judge strategic options against them, and read the share, margin, and growth arithmetic a strategy stands on
  • Translate a strategy into objectives, measures, and review routines — and adapt it without abandoning it

Who It's For

Built for the strategist who must choose

Business Strategy in Practice is for senior managers and general managers who own a business unit's results, strategy, planning, and chief-of-staff roles whose work is the analysis itself,

founders and owners who are the strategy function in their firm, and leaders moving from functional to general responsibility, who know one part of the value chain deeply and now must judge the whole firm, its industry, and its future at once.

This is a Leadership & Management course. It assumes experience of working inside a business and comfort reading simple financial figures — revenue, cost, margin, share — and no prior strategy coursework: the applied toolkit, taught whole, on one company you will come to know well.
