Business Writing
Signature Course No. 39 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Business Writing course, in the Business Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for every professional who writes at work — managers and team leads whose requests, updates, and hard messages set the tone for a whole team's week, people who write proposals and reports whose documents must persuade a reader who owes them nothing, and capable people whose writing undersells them. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Thinking and Structure: Know the Reader, Find the Point, Put It in Order — write for one reader who must act, say the one point in one sentence first, put the bottom line where the reader looks, order what follows as an argument, give each paragraph one job, write subject lines that tell the truth, put the ask up front whole, assemble the complete email, and judge length and the send decision like an editor, finishing with The Email That Gets Answered; then, Module 2 — The Documents and the Edit: Proposals, Reports, Hard Messages, and the Final Pass — build proposals that persuade honestly and reports busy people finish, cut jargon and dead phrases for plain words, restore actors and strong verbs to your sentences, run the ruthless edit, hold tone firm without hostile and warm without sloppy, write the hard messages — declines, bad news, and overdue replies — cleanly and on time, and sign your own writing standard, finishing with The Document That Lands. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Email That Gets Answered and in The Document That Lands. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The signature, stated plainly. This course works on your actual writing. Most writing courses teach about writing and leave your inbox exactly as they found it. This one does not: bring real work — an email you must send, a report paragraph that will not sit right, a proposal you are drafting — anonymized where it needs to be, and the Coach will make you revise it, concept by concept, until it does the job. One rule protects that signature, and it is absolute: do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a revised email and a rebuilt short proposal or report — not just ideas about documents. The course also makes no claims it cannot keep: it names no studies, prints no statistics, and promises no percentages about how people read or what they remember, and grammar is taught as judgment in service of clarity, not as schoolroom rule-recitation.
This is the thirty-ninth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Know the Reader → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Know the Reader
The Coach starts by examining the writing you actually send — who your documents are really for, where the point lands, and what your asks look like from the reader's side of the inbox, as they stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Email That Gets Answered for Module 1 and The Document That Lands for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most business writing fails before the second paragraph — not because the writer could not write, but because nobody taught them what a document is for. This course teaches writing that gets read and acted on: know your reader, find the one point, and put structure before sentences. You will learn to write emails whose subject lines tell the truth and whose ask comes up front, proposals that persuade honestly, and reports busy people actually finish. You will learn to edit ruthlessly — plain words, active voice, no padding — and to set tone on purpose: firm without hostile, warm without sloppy. And you will learn to write the hard messages — declines, bad news, and overdue replies — cleanly and on time. The course works on your actual writing throughout: bring real documents, anonymized, and leave with them fixed.

- Structure emails, proposals, and reports so the ask comes first and the reader finishes

Built for every professional who writes at work
Business Writing is for every professional who writes at work — which is to say, every professional; managers and team leads whose requests, updates, and hard messages set the tone for a whole team's week; people who write proposals and reports — consultants, analysts, project leads, and owners — whose documents must persuade a reader who owes them nothing; and capable people whose writing undersells them, strong thinkers whose emails get skipped and whose reports get skimmed: know your reader and land one clear point in every document, structure emails, proposals, and reports so the ask comes first and the reader finishes, edit ruthlessly, and write the hard messages cleanly.
The signature applies here, too. This course works on your actual writing: bring real documents, anonymized — do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem — and leave with them fixed. The course assumes you can write a grammatical sentence; it does not assume anyone ever taught you to write for a reader.
