Cloud Computing Essentials
Signature Course No. 162 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Cloud Computing Essentials course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
Every organization now runs on computing it mostly does not own — in buildings it will never enter, operated by people it will never meet — and the leaders who sign for it are routinely asked to approve architectures they cannot picture, bills they cannot read, and migrations they cannot judge. This course closes that gap.
You build the machine in your head. What the cloud actually is underneath the marketing — pooled machines, virtualized, rented by the hour through an API — then the core services every system is assembled from: compute in its three forms, storage in its three shapes, the networking read as districts and doors, and the databases that hold the record.
Then you design on the two axes and run it well. The service models that draw the control line per workload, and place — regions, availability zones, deployment models — under the forces of elasticity and identity; then the shared responsibility line, encryption and key custody, the bill read as an architecture diagram, FinOps habits, reliability arithmetic, and observability.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — The Working Model: What the Cloud Is and How Its Pieces Fit — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Architecture Read; then, Module 2 — Running Well on Rented Ground: Cost, Reliability, Security, and Judgment — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Cloud Decision.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Architecture Read, a clear-eyed account of a fictional logistics estate and what its cloud form would actually be made of, written for its board before any vendor is chosen; and The Cloud Decision, a consultancy's proposal dissected workload by workload and decided, producing your cloud decision playbook — the evaluation standard, the cost and reliability checks, and the twelve-month plan.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. This course names no provider's current pricing, tiers, or feature set as fact, and every figure in it is a stipulated teaching figure you can recompute yourself. It teaches principles, not console procedures, and it makes no certification promise and no savings promise.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Cloud Computing Essentials is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. When a cloud system goes down at nine in the morning, "the cloud is down" is not a diagnosis — somewhere, specific machines in a specific building have failed, and the course's first concept teaches you to say which and why. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Architecture Read for Module 1 and The Cloud Decision for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Mechanism before meaning. Every term is cashed out in what physically happens before it is used in judgment — what a load balancer is for, why storage comes in three shapes, why geography is an architectural decision — because the professional who can always ask "yes, but what actually happens?" is the one vendors stop performing for.
Module 1 builds the working model. The cloud itself, compute, storage, networking, and databases, then the two axes — the control line and place — under elasticity and identity, ending in an architecture read of one whole estate.
Module 2 spends the model. Security drawn on the correct side of the line, the bill read as a design, reliability bought deliberately and rehearsed, migration chosen door by door, the exit priced — and the leader's standard for deciding it all.
Every design decision is also a cost decision and a failure decision. Choose a storage tier and you have chosen a retrieval price and a recovery time; choose a region and you have chosen a latency and a legal jurisdiction. The course never teaches cost, reliability, or security as subjects bolted onto design — they are design, read three ways.
What you will learn
- Build the working model: what the cloud is mechanically, and the core services — compute, storage, networking, databases — every system is assembled from
- Design on the two axes: service models and the control line, and place — regions, availability zones, deployment models — with elasticity and identity as the forces that shape every design
- Run it well: security on the correct side of the shared responsibility line, encryption and keys, the bill read as an architecture diagram, FinOps habits, reliability arithmetic, disaster recovery, and observability
- Decide like a leader: migration chosen per workload, the vendor landscape and the true price of leaving, and the standard for evaluating proposals and designs you will never operate yourself
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Cloud Computing Essentials, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Architecture Read and The Cloud Decision
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for people who sign for systems they do not operate
Tech-adjacent managers and directors — operations, business systems, program and product leads — who sit in architecture discussions and are expected to follow, question, and sign.
Professionals evaluating a move to the cloud — owners of a migration decision, a provider selection, or a proposal from a consultancy — who need to judge what they are being sold, and leaders who approve cloud spending and want to know which numbers are design, which are waste, and which are weather.
Career movers and the meeting-nodders — project managers, analysts, support and service leads whose next job assumes a working model of the cloud they were never taught, and anyone fluent in the vocabulary's surface who cannot yet say what a region is, why the egress line moved, or where their data actually sleeps. The course assumes no engineering background and no mathematics beyond ordinary business arithmetic.
