Communication Skills Masterclass

Signature Course No. 179 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Communication Skills Masterclass course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for team leads and supervisors whose instructions, handoffs, and corrections decide whether work is done once or done twice — for managers who carry messages up, down, and across — for individual contributors moving toward leadership, whose next limit is the room — and for client-facing staff who deliver delays, refusals, and corrections to people outside the building, where a message that lands wrong costs money.

It works in the order a message travels: first, Module 1 — Hear It Right, Say It Straight — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Delay, Told Straight; then, Module 2 — Carry It Across the Building — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Change That Has to Land.

Every concept is a practised skill, not a topic. You do not finish a concept by agreeing with it. You finish it by doing the move, on a fresh situation, without help, to a stated standard — in the rooms where your week actually happens: the handoff that cannot afford a dropped detail, the meeting where your idea gets ninety seconds, the afternoon you have to tell a client something they do not want to hear.

One running workplace carries the teaching: Elmwood Fabrication Co., a fictional maker of industrial shelving and storage systems, and Samira Patel, an operations lead there — so every skill is practised on situations with real texture, between competent people, where the failures actually happen.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Delay, Told Straight and in The Change That Has to Land. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete communication plan for telling a client and a plant, at the same time, about a serious delay, and a launch communication pack for a change that two teams do not want — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.

This is the one hundred and seventy-ninth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with listening that verifies. Most workplace messages fail twice — once at the ear, and once at the mouth — and the second failure is usually blamed for the first. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Delay, Told Straight for Module 1 and The Change That Has to Land for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Most workplace damage is not done by bad intentions or missing talent. It is done in the gap between what one person meant and what another person heard — a handoff detail nobody verified, a request nobody could act on, a concern nobody surfaced until it became a crisis, a refusal delivered so badly that the relationship paid for what the answer cost nothing.

This course closes that gap, skill by skill. You will learn to listen in a way that proves you understood, to ask questions that find the real issue under the stated one, to put your point first and support it in an order a busy listener can follow, to adapt the same message to the plant floor, the client, and the boardroom without changing its truth, to deliver difficult news whole and early, to say no in a form the other person can accept, to present an idea so a meeting can actually decide on it, to choose between speaking, writing, and meeting — and to know when each of those channels will betray you.

You will learn to speak upward to senior people in the form they can use, to hand work across teams and cultures without the usual friction losses, to give feedback that changes behaviour instead of merely recording your irritation, to explain numbers and trade-offs in plain words, to brief under pressure when there is no time to prepare, and to repair your own messages when they land wrong — because some of them will, and the repair is a skill, not an apology tour.

What you will learn

  • Listen so that understanding is verified, not assumed — and ask questions that surface the real issue
  • Speak with structure: point first, support in order, the ask stated so it can be acted on
  • Adapt one true message to different audiences, and choose the channel that will not betray it
  • Deliver difficult messages whole, say no cleanly, and push back without damaging the working relationship
  • Present an idea in a meeting so it can be decided, and communicate upward in the form senior people can use
  • Hand work across teams and cultures, give feedback that lands, and run a hard conversation to its end
  • Explain figures and trade-offs plainly, brief under pressure, and repair a message that landed wrong

Who It's For

Built for the person whose messages carry the work

Communication Skills Masterclass is for team leads and supervisors — whose instructions, handoffs, and corrections decide whether work is done once or done twice, managers — who carry messages up, down, and across, and whose meetings either produce decisions or produce more meetings,

individual contributors moving toward leadership — whose technical work is sound and whose next limit is the room: presenting, pushing back, speaking to senior people — and client-facing staff — who deliver delays, refusals, and corrections to people outside the building, where a message that lands wrong costs money.

Every concept is taught as a practised move and proven on a fresh situation: listening that verifies, questioning that surfaces the real issue, structure that puts the point first, and the repair that keeps the person when a message lands wrong.

This is a Communication & Influence course. It assumes you already communicate at work every day and that some of it goes well. It assumes no prior course.
