Corporate Financial Management
Signature Course No. 144 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Corporate Financial Management course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for finance managers and treasurers, controllers and FP&A leads moving toward the CFO chair, founders and owners with their own money on the table, and general managers whose project proposals live or die by hurdle rates and capital rationing.
It works in the order the job actually runs: first, Module 1 — The Price of Money and the Investment Decision — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Investment Committee Paper; then, Module 2 — Structure, Payout, and the Value of the Firm — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Financing and Payout Plan.
You work on one running company throughout — a gear and housing maker whose complete financial position you learn whole in the second concept, then price, appraise, structure, and value across the remaining sixteen. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Investment Committee Paper and in The Financing and Payout Plan. The first produces an investment committee paper on a real expansion choice, priced and defended. The second produces a complete financing and payout plan for a growth program — structure, raising, payout, working capital, and a valuation check, in one document a board could act on.
This is the one hundred and forty-fourth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the decision set. A company does not run out of money in general — it runs out of money on a specific decision, made at a specific price, on a specific date. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Investment Committee Paper for Module 1 and The Financing and Payout Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every company is two businesses at once. The first is the one customers see: products, plants, people, orders. The second is invisible and decides whether the first one survives: the flow of money into, through, and out of the firm. Corporate financial management is the discipline of running that second business well, and this course teaches it from the decision chair.
You will price time itself — why a dollar next year is worth less than a dollar today, and by exactly how much. You will build the company's cost of capital from its parts, and appraise investments with net present value, learning precisely where the internal rate of return — the most quoted number in business — breaks down and misleads.
Then the policy questions: how much debt a firm should carry and what the tax shield is really worth; how to raise money without giving away the company; whether cash should leave as dividends or buybacks, and what each choice commits you to; how working-capital policy quietly consumes or releases millions; and how to value your own firm when an internal decision depends on the answer.
What you will learn
- Frame the finance function's decision set and the objective those decisions serve
- Price time — discount and compound cash flows at a stated rate, and build free cash flow from accounting figures
- Build a weighted average cost of capital from its components, with every input stated
- Appraise investments by net present value, and state exactly where IRR and the secondary rules fail
- Estimate incremental project cash flows and test them against risk, scenarios, and break-even
- Choose a capital structure and a route to raise capital, weighing shield, distress, dilution, and cost
- Set dividend, buyback, and working-capital policy, and value the firm for internal decisions
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Corporate Financial Management, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies

- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the person in the decision chair
Corporate Financial Management is for finance managers and treasurers — who run capital budgets, borrowing programs, and payout decisions inside real companies and need the decision rules to hold up under a board's questions, controllers and FP&A leads moving toward the CFO chair — who know the statements cold and now need the layer above them: what the numbers are for, founders and owners — who must choose between debt and equity, growth and payout, with their own money on the table, and general managers with P&L responsibility — whose project proposals live or die by hurdle rates and capital rationing, and who want to argue for capital in the language the finance function actually uses.
This is a Sales, Service & Revenue course. It assumes comfort with arithmetic and a working acquaintance with the three financial statements. It assumes no prior study of finance. If you can read an income statement and multiply a percentage, you have everything this course requires to start — the rest is built here, concept by concept, on one company you will come to know very well.
You finish with two documents a board could act on: an investment committee paper on a real expansion choice, priced and defended, and a complete financing and payout plan for a growth program — structure, raising, payout, working capital, and a valuation check in a single plan.
