Building Team Trust

Most teams do not lose trust in a single dramatic betrayal. They lose it in small denominations: a promise made casually on Tuesday and forgotten by Friday, an assignment handed out in a way nobody can explain, credit that lands on the wrong desk, news the team hears from another department first, a confidence repeated in a corridor by someone who meant no harm. Each incident is small enough to excuse. Together they write a record, and the team reads the record accurately even when no one says so out loud: people stop relying on each other, start keeping private copies and private workarounds, and do the careful, duplicated, guarded work that teams do when trust is gone. This course teaches the other way of working. You will learn to read trust as a record — your own record first — and to build it from observable behaviors: saying what you will do and doing it, telling colleagues the truth early, showing competence people can watch and admitting where it ends, dealing fairly in the unglamorous allocations, and keeping confidences. You will learn to carry that record across functions, shifts, and team changes, and to repair it when it breaks — by naming the specific act, acknowledging it without editing, making amends, and changing the behavior, over time, until the new record is longer than the old one.
