Data Privacy Basics for Every Employee

Nearly every job now touches other people's information. The register, the intake desk, the scheduling system, the inbox, the shared drive — names, addresses, account details, health and school and family facts, the ordinary material of other people's lives passes through ordinary employees' hands all day, usually without anyone pausing to notice what is being held. Most privacy failures are not dramatic and not malicious. They are a form that asked for more than the work needed, a file sent to a wider audience than its purpose allowed, a record kept years past its usefulness, a helpful answer given to a caller who should never have received it. This course teaches data privacy as an employee discipline: knowing what you are holding, collecting and using only what the purpose requires, letting only the people whose jobs require it see it, keeping it in the places and for the length of time the work allows, and responding — in the first minutes, fast and without shame — when information goes to the wrong place. By the end of this program you will handle other people's information the way you would want your own handled by a stranger on a busy day: as something borrowed, for a purpose, and returned or put away when the purpose is done.
