About This Course
Most workplaces do not lack a policy on impairment. They lack people who know what to do in the ninety seconds between noticing something is wrong and the policy becoming relevant. A colleague is unsteady on work that requires steadiness. A driver is slow and strange before a run that cannot afford slow and strange. A dependable person is suddenly not dependable, in ways everyone nearby can see and nobody nearby will name. In that gap, untrained people do one of three things, all of them understandable and all of them wrong: they guess at a cause and accuse, they decide it is not their business and look away, or they quietly cover for the person and take on work nobody should be doing impaired nearby. This course closes that gap. You will learn to recognize impairment as observable unfitness for the work at hand — behavior, stated plainly, with no diagnosis attached. You will learn the single correct employee move and practice it until it is a habit rather than a dilemma. You will learn the honest self-check that safety-critical work demands of your own state, and the proper channels for the legitimate cases — medication, illness, exhaustion — that deserve disclosure rather than concealment. Supervisors will learn the disciplined path whole: the observation conversation, removal from safety-critical work with dignity, documentation that records facts and nothing else, and the privacy owed after the event. By the end of this program, impairment will have stopped being a whispered accusation and become what it should always have been: a safety situation with a known, calm, repeatable response that protects people in both directions — the people the impaired work could hurt, and the person whose dignity decides whether the next problem gets hidden or surfaced.
