Critical Thinking

Signature Course No. 44 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Critical Thinking course, in the Professional Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for every professional whose work runs on judgment — managers and team leads whose calls set budgets, staffing, and direction, analysts, consultants, and project leads whose recommendations must survive a sceptical reader, and capable people whose reasoning undersells them. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Seeing Clearly: Claims, Evidence, and the Argument Underneath — sort claims from evidence and name what you actually have, surface the assumptions under any recommendation, map an argument's anatomy — conclusion, reasons, and the missing step — test evidence for relevance, sufficiency, and connection, refuse a causal claim until the rival explanations have been heard, meet the named reasoning traps as patterns to catch in the room, put any source on trial, and steelman the other side, finishing with The Argument Audit; then, Module 2 — Testing Hard: Traps, Sources, and the Willingness to Be Wrong — decide in advance what would change your mind, think inside live meetings without stalling them, margin memos until weak thinking shows, question any number by what it actually measures, practise dissent that helps instead of performing, put your own mind on trial first, decide under uncertainty without pretending to know, review the call you made against its record, and sign your own thinking standard, finishing with The Decision You Can Defend. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Argument Audit and in The Decision You Can Defend. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

The signature, stated plainly. This course works on your actual thinking. Most thinking courses teach about thinking and leave your judgment exactly as they found it. This one does not: bring a real decision — a memo you must judge, a recommendation you must defend, a meeting you must think through — anonymized where it needs to be, and the Coach will make you audit it, concept by concept, until the reasoning holds. One rule protects that signature, and it is absolute: do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a completed argument audit and a defended decision with its signed standard — not just ideas about thinking. The course also makes no claims it cannot keep: it names no studies, prints no statistics, and teaches every named reasoning pattern as a pattern to spot in real memos and meetings, never with fabricated research claims or invented figures.

This is the forty-fourth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Sort the Claims → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Sort the Claims

The Coach starts by examining the reasoning you actually use — the claims you accept, the evidence you rest them on, and the assumptions you never say out loud, as they stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Argument Audit for Module 1 and The Decision You Can Defend for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Most workplace decisions fail before the meeting ends — not for lack of information, but because nobody checked the thinking: a claim was treated as evidence, an assumption went unnamed, or a fluent argument hid a broken step. This course teaches critical thinking as a workplace discipline. You will learn to separate claims from evidence and test both before you believe either, to surface the assumptions under any argument — including your own — and to map how an argument is built before you judge it. You will learn the reasoning traps that derail memos, meetings, and decisions as named patterns you can catch in the room, to judge sources by how they could know rather than how confidently they speak, to steelman the other side honestly, and to decide in advance what would change your mind. You will leave with a personal standard for thinking at work that you can state, follow, and defend.

What you will learn

  • Separate claims from evidence and test both before you believe either
  • Surface the assumptions hiding under any argument — including your own
  • Spot the reasoning traps that derail memos, meetings, and decisions
  • Steelman the other side and name what would change your mind

Who It's For

Built for every professional whose work runs on judgment

Critical Thinking is for every professional whose work runs on judgment — managers and team leads whose calls set budgets, staffing, and direction; analysts, consultants, and project leads whose recommendations must survive a sceptical reader; anyone who sits in meetings where decisions get made and has watched a room agree, fluently and quickly, to something nobody had actually examined; and capable people whose reasoning undersells them, strong performers who sense a flaw in the argument in front of them but cannot yet name it, press it, or repair it on the spot: separate claims from evidence, surface the assumptions, spot the traps, and steelman the other side.

The signature applies here, too. This course works on your actual thinking: bring real decisions, anonymized — do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem — and leave with them audited. The course assumes you are intelligent and experienced; it does not assume anyone ever taught you to inspect your own reasoning as a discipline.
