Data Analytics for Managers

Signature Course No. 28 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Data Analytics for Managers course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for team leads and frontline managers — who receive reports, dashboards, and summaries every week — who suspect the numbers are doing more persuading than informing, and who want to know what questions expose the difference, middle managers and department heads — who commission analysis from analysts, vendors, and their own staff — who need to write a brief that produces checkable work instead of confident slides, operations, sales, service, and plant managers — who work their own spreadsheets between reports — who group, average,

and chart their team's numbers and want those numbers to survive a skeptical reader, and managers who present upward — who carry findings to directors and executives — who need to state a result and its limits in the same breath without losing the room.

It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — From Question to Working Table: Framing, Sources, and the Spreadsheet Craft — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Commissioned Question and the Clean Table; then, Module 2 — From Table to Truthful Story: Honest Charts, Standard Traps, and the Finding Presented — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Finding, Presented Whole.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Commissioned Question and the Clean Table and in The Finding, Presented Whole. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self- paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

The rule, stated plainly — and it is fourfold. A manager's number is only as good as the question it answers, the data it came from, and the path it traveled — and the manager who cannot state all three does not have a finding. He has a rumor with formatting.

First, every figure a manager uses in a decision or a presentation must be traceable: its source named, its definition stated, and the steps that produced it describable by the person presenting it.

Second, an average is never presented without the spread behind it; a summary that hides a distribution is not a summary, it is a claim.

Third, correlation is never presented as cause; a claim of cause carries a burden of evidence this course names explicitly, and the burden does not shrink because the story is a good one. Fourth, a chart is part of the claim: scale, range, and selection are choices, and a chart built to mislead is a false statement made with pictures instead of words. If a technique in this course cannot be run inside that rule, it is not taught here.

This course does not make analysts, and it confers no analyst credential; it does not teach statistics beyond the working ideas a manager needs, and it certifies no software. It names no invented statistics, prints no benchmarks it cannot support, and promises no outcome for any method; its teaching situations are invented, and their arithmetic is small, checkable, and meant to be checked.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a commissioned question worked to a clean, checked table, and a finding presented whole, with your written standard — not just ideas about data.

This is the twenty-eighth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Own the Outcome → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Own the Outcome

The Coach starts where the work begins — downstream of the dashboard, with the summary that arrived already charted and already concluded, and the dozen quiet decisions that shaped its story before you ever saw it. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Commissioned Question and the Clean Table for Module 1 and The Finding, Presented Whole for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every manager now works downstream of more data than any manager in history was asked to handle, and most were never taught how the numbers reaching them were made. The dashboard arrives already summarized. The analyst's deck arrives already charted. The vendor's report arrives already concluded. Between the raw records and the manager's desk sit a dozen quiet decisions — what counted, what was excluded, what was averaged, what the axis starts at — and each one shaped the story before the manager ever saw it.

This course teaches the manager to walk back down that path: to frame the question before anyone touches data, to work a table at spreadsheet level with his own hands, to summarize without hiding what matters, to read charts and claims with a checker's eye, and to present a finding with its limits stated as plainly as its result.

You will learn to brief analysts precisely and question them intelligently, to build comparisons like for like, and to disarm the standard traps — the untraceable figure, the average without its spread, the correlation wearing a cause's clothes.

By the end of this program, you will have a complete working discipline for the manager's analytics craft — and a written standard you sign and work by.

What you will learn

  • Frame an answerable question — decision, population, period, and measure defined — and commission analysis against it
  • Work data at spreadsheet level: clean it, group it, and compare it yourself, knowing what each operation does to the numbers
  • Summarize and chart honestly — averages with the spread behind them, rates with their bases, pictures that do not mislead
  • Interrogate any analysis — its causal claims, its missing people, its small-number swings — and present a finding with its limits stated

Who It's For

Built for the practitioner who is answerable for decisions the numbers inform

Data Analytics for Managers is for team leads and frontline managers — who receive reports, dashboards, and summaries every week — who suspect the numbers are doing more persuading than informing, and who want to know what questions expose the difference, middle managers and department heads — who commission analysis from analysts, vendors, and their own staff — who need to write a brief that produces checkable work instead of confident slides, operations, sales, service, and plant managers — who work their own spreadsheets between reports — who group, average,

and chart their team's numbers and want those numbers to survive a skeptical reader, and managers who present upward — who carry findings to directors and executives — who need to state a result and its limits in the same breath without losing the room.

The course assumes you manage people and are answerable for decisions. It does not assume a mathematics background beyond ordinary arithmetic, and it does not teach you to be an analyst. It starts where the working manager actually is: the numbers are here, they are genuinely useful, and nobody has yet taught me how they were made or how to check them.
