Data-Driven Decision-Making

Signature Course No. 49 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Data-Driven Decision-Making course, in the Business Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for every professional who decides with numbers — managers and team leads whose staffing, scheduling, budget, and priority decisions rest on quoted numbers, analysts, project leads, and operators who produce or consume reports and dashboards, owners and consultants whose recommendations carry money with them, and capable people whose judgment undersells them. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Frame the Decision, Know the Number: The Question, the Metric, and the Honest Count — frame the decision before the data, state what evidence would change your mind, choose what to measure, interrogate what a metric actually counts, keep denominators and base rates in view, read averages beside distributions, size small samples honestly, and compare like against like, finishing with The Decision Framed Right; then, Module 2 — Read the Evidence Honestly: Cause, Charts, and the Recommendation — separate correlation from cause, read charts honestly and price how they mislead, read change against baselines, count both sides of every trade-off, decide inside stated ranges, update when the data changes, present a recommendation as claim, evidence, and limits, and sign your own decision standard, finishing with The Recommendation That Holds Up. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Decision Framed Right and in The Recommendation That Holds Up. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

The signature, stated plainly. This course works on your actual decisions. Most data courses teach about charts and leave your next real decision exactly as unsupported as the last one. This one does not: bring a real decision — one you face at work, with the numbers you actually have — anonymized where it needs to be, and the Coach will make you frame it, check its evidence, and defend it, concept by concept, until the recommendation holds up. One rule protects that signature, and it is absolute: do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a framed decision and a rebuilt recommendation — not just ideas about deciding. The course also works under a fence, and the fence is absolute: this course cites no real-world research findings, every worked example uses illustrative numbers — fictional companies and round sample data presented as examples, never as findings — and every computation is shown step by step so you can check the arithmetic yourself. It names no software products as recommendations: the craft works with a pencil, a spreadsheet, or whatever system your workplace already runs.

This is the forty-ninth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Frame the Decision → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Frame the Decision

The Coach starts by examining the decisions you actually make — how the question was framed, which numbers were quoted, and what they actually counted, as they stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Decision Framed Right for Module 1 and The Recommendation That Holds Up for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Most workplace decisions fail before the first number is gathered — not because the decider could not think, but because nobody taught them what evidence is for. The question gets framed after the answer is already favored, a metric gets quoted without anyone asking what it counts, an average gets trusted while the spread underneath it carries the whole story, and a chart gets believed because it looks clean. This course teaches deciding with evidence. You will learn to frame the decision before the data, to state in advance what evidence would change your mind, to choose what to measure and to interrogate what a metric actually counts, to keep denominators and base rates in view, to read averages alongside distributions, to compare like against like, and to distrust — politely, precisely, and on evidence — the chart that is trying to sell you something. You will learn to count both sides of a trade-off, to decide honestly inside a range of uncertainty, to update when the data changes instead of defending the first answer, and to present a recommendation that carries its claim, its evidence, and its limits in the open. The course works on your actual decisions throughout: bring real decisions, anonymized, and leave with them framed, checked, and defensible.

What you will learn

  • Know what every metric counts, with its denominator, definition, and base rate
  • Read averages, distributions, comparisons, and charts honestly — including how they mislead
  • Present a data-backed recommendation with its limits, and update it when the evidence changes

Who It's For

Built for every professional who decides with numbers

Data-Driven Decision-Making is for managers and team leads whose staffing, scheduling, budget, and priority decisions are quoted numbers they did not check; analysts, project leads, and operators who produce or consume reports, dashboards, and comparisons; owners and consultants whose recommendations carry money with them; and capable people whose judgment undersells them, strong deciders whose recommendations lose to weaker ones with a cleaner chart: frame the decision before the data, know what every metric counts, read averages, distributions, comparisons, and charts honestly, and present a recommendation with its limits in the open.

The signature applies here, too. This course works on your actual decisions: bring real decisions, anonymized — do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem — and leave with them framed, checked, and defensible. The course assumes you can add, divide, and read a simple chart; it does not assume anyone ever taught you to decide with evidence.
