Fluent in Data: Data Confidence for Every Professional
Signature Course No. 102 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Fluent in Data course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for anyone who sits in meetings where numbers decide things, professionals who receive reports they did not make, people who have to act on a claim — a vendor's improvement figure, a team's success rate, a manager's average — and anyone who presents numbers to others and wants the story to be honest, clear, and able to survive a fair question.
It works in the order the skill has to happen: first, Module 1 — Reading Data Without Fear: What Numbers Are and How They Mislead — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Report That Looked Fine; then, Module 2 — Using Data at Work: Questions, Quality, and Decisions — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with Your Own Data Brief.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Report That Looked Fine and in Your Own Data Brief. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Every number in the exercises in this course is small, invented for teaching, and checkable by the learner by hand. When a concept uses an average, the learner can add the figures on paper and divide. When a concept uses a percentage, the learner can work it backwards and see where it came from. No exercise requires a calculator trick, a statistics package, or trust in the author's arithmetic — the arithmetic is left visible on purpose, because confidence that cannot be checked is not confidence at all.
This course prints no market statistics. It makes no claims about how many companies do this or what share of workers do that, and it borrows no figures from surveys, reports, or marketplace courses. No market statistics, survey findings, or external figures are printed anywhere in the book, because the course's claim on the learner's trust rests on every figure being verifiable from the page itself.
Count the rows yourself, re-read the axis yourself, ask who was counted and who was left out. If a learner needs more mathematics than that to follow a page, the page has failed, not the learner.
And the stance toward every figure: a number is a claim, and a claim can be questioned with respect.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a claim-by-claim audit, a corrected figures sheet, a replacement summary page, and a five-minute briefing script for a real report, and your own one-page data brief on your real work, built to be used in a real meeting — not just ideas about data.
This is the one hundred and second course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the description underneath the number. A number in a report is not the world itself — it is a description someone made, by counting something, in some way, for some reason — and you can always ask how it was made. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Report That Looked Fine for Module 1 and Your Own Data Brief for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most professionals do not need to become analysts — they need to stop being misled by numbers and start using numbers well in the work they already do.
This course builds that confidence from the ground up: how to read charts, tables, and dashboards without being led by them, how to ask the right questions of any dataset, report, or claim, how to work cleanly with definitions, quality, averages, percentages, and the difference between correlation and cause, and how to turn numbers into a clear decision and a clear story that other people can act on.
Every idea is taught in plain language, with small numbers you can check by hand, so the skill transfers the next morning to the meeting, the inbox, and the report already waiting on your desk.

- Ask the right questions of any dataset, report, or claim

Built for every professional who meets numbers
Fluent in Data is for anyone who sits in meetings where numbers decide things — who watches a chart go up on the screen, feels unsure whether to believe it, and stays quiet because asking feels risky, professionals who receive reports they did not make — dashboards, spreadsheets, and summaries from other teams, where the definitions, the time period, and the missing pieces are never explained, people who have to act on a claim — a vendor's improvement figure, a team's success rate,
a manager's average — without having the time or the tools to rebuild the analysis from scratch, anyone who presents numbers to others — in an update, a proposal, or a one-page brief — and wants the story to be honest, clear, and able to survive a fair question, and organizations whose people are capable and experienced, but whose decisions wobble because no one shares a common, careful way of reading the numbers in front of them.
Every number in the exercises in this course is small, invented for teaching, and checkable by the learner by hand.
This course prints no market statistics. It makes no claims about how many companies do this or what share of workers do that, and it borrows no figures from surveys, reports, or marketplace courses. This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course and it assumes nothing but a working life: no earlier Signature Course, and no mathematics background beyond arithmetic.
If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide — and you meet numbers at work — you have everything this course requires. It works from small numbers you can check by hand, one concept at a time, so the skill transfers the next morning to the meeting, the inbox, and the report already waiting on your desk.
