Data Science Literacy for Professionals

Signature Course No. 120 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Data Science Literacy for Professionals course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

There is no code anywhere in this course, and no mathematics beyond ordinary arithmetic: this is literacy for non-specialists — the people who commission, read, and act on data work, and who must judge claims about it.

This is the course for managers and executives who act on reports they did not produce, professionals who commission data work — hiring analysts, buying vendor systems, briefing consultants — anyone who sits in rooms where charts end arguments, owners and operators of smaller organizations with no specialist on staff, and curious non-specialists who use data claims in their own field.

It works in the order the skill runs: first, Module 1 — Reading Data Without Being Fooled: What Was Counted, Who Is Missing, and What the Claim Actually Says — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Slow Read; then, Module 2 — Models, Claims, and Decisions: Judging Predictions, Commissioning Work, and Deciding — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with Commission and Judge.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Slow Read and in Commission and Judge. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This is literacy for non-specialists, and there is no code anywhere in this course. No term in this course is worn as status.

This course prints no folklore statistics — every percentage, average, and comparison in these pages is computed correctly from numbers printed on the page, in arithmetic a reader can redo with a pencil. The claim is never the evidence. No percentage without its base. Never accept an accuracy figure until you can state the base rate, the lazy system's score, and the share of flags that are true. A model is not a decision.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete slow-read verdict document the leadership team can act on, and a commission-and-judgment document ending in a recorded decision — not just ideas about data.

This is the one hundred and twentieth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what a number is. A number is not a fact about the world. It is a fact about a record — and the record was made by choices. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Slow Read for Module 1 and Commission and Judge for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the

What You'll Learn

Every week, someone puts a number in front of you and asks you to act on it. A dashboard says sales are up. A vendor says its system is highly accurate. A report says customers who get one offer buy more than customers who do not. A chart rises to the right, beautifully, and the room nods.

Most of those claims are partly true. Some are true and still mislead. A few are wrong in ways that cost real money. Almost none of them can be judged from the headline alone — and judging them is now part of nearly every professional's job, whether or not the word data appears in the job title.

This course teaches you to read data work the way a careful person reads a contract: slowly, with named questions, looking for what is missing as hard as for what is present. You will learn what data science actually is — a disciplined way of learning from records — and what it is not.

You will learn where records come from and what never got recorded, how averages hide the spread behind them, how percentages shrink or swell depending on the base underneath them, why two things moving together does not make one the cause of the other, how a sample can mislead by who is missing from it, how charts argue, and how honest uncertainty sounds.

Then you will turn to models: what a model is, the two ways a prediction can be wrong, why an accuracy claim means little until you know how rare the thing being predicted is, what an experiment buys that an observation cannot, what the common machine learning words mean in plain duties, why a model fitted to yesterday's world can go stale, what ethics and consent require of a manager, how to commission data work so you get an answer you can use,

and finally how to decide when the analysis and your own judgment disagree.

You will not write code. You will not build a model. You will leave able to do the job that is actually yours: read a claim, question it well, and decide — and to know, in each case, exactly which question did the work.

What you will learn

  • Read a data claim slowly — what was counted, in whom, and compared to what
  • Spot the standard ways numbers mislead — hidden spread, shifting bases, missing people, and arguments made by charts
  • Judge model and accuracy claims in plain words — the two kinds of error, the base-rate trap, and what experiments actually prove
  • Commission data work well and decide under a number — the brief, the questions, the deliverable, and what to do when analysis and judgment disagree

Who It's For

Built for the person who signs, governs, and answers

Data Science Literacy for Professionals is for managers and executives who act on reports they did not produce — who sign off on dashboards, forecasts, and studies, and carry the consequences when a confident number turns out to be a weak one; professionals who commission data work; anyone who sits in rooms where charts end arguments; owners and operators of smaller organizations; and curious non-specialists.

This course assumes no mathematics beyond ordinary arithmetic — adding, dividing, and comparing counts — and no technical background at all. If you can check a restaurant bill, you have the arithmetic this course uses. What it asks for instead is slower reading and the willingness to ask one more question than the room usually asks.
