Design Thinking for Innovation

Signature Course No. 168 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Design Thinking for Innovation course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for managers and sponsors who approve innovation budgets and need to know which questions expose a weak project — and for product, service, and operations leads who run improvement and new-offer work against real users, real constraints, and real deadlines.

It is also for internal consultants and change leads who are handed problems stated as solutions and must get the organisation back to the problem before the money is spent — and for founders and small-business owners whose first version has to be a test, not a bet.

Module 1 — Find the Right Problem — works through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Problem Worth Funding: frame the challenge, watch the work where it happens, interview for stories, and turn field notes into a definition worth solving.

Module 2 — Test Your Way to the Right Answer — works through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Evidence to Decide: generate range, select by riskiest assumption, prototype a question, test in context, and rule — iterate, pivot, or stop.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Problem Worth Funding and in The Evidence to Decide. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a discovery-and-definition package a sponsor could fund, and a test-and-decide package a sponsor can rule on — written to be usable on the real job, not just filed in the course.

This is the one hundred and sixty-eighth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the problem before the solution. An organisation's scarcest resource is not ideas. It is verified problems worth its money. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Problem Worth Funding for Module 1 and The Evidence to Decide for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every organisation has more ideas than it can afford and less certainty than it admits. The expensive failures rarely come from a shortage of creativity.

They come from solving the wrong problem beautifully: a team falls in love with a solution, builds it at full cost, and discovers at launch that the people it was built for never had the problem it solves.

This course teaches the discipline that prevents that failure — a five-stage process run as a loop with evidence gates, so an organisation's biggest uncertainties become cheap to examine before they become expensive to own.

You learn it end to end: frame a challenge, learn from people by watching their work and hearing their stories, define the problem, generate and select ideas, prototype a question, test in the real context, and decide — then carry what survives into a pilot, a business case, and a running system.

What you will learn

  • Run the design thinking process as a loop with evidence gates — and judge where any project actually stands in it
  • Frame an innovation challenge with a sponsor, a scope, and success measures that can be checked
  • Learn from users by observing their work in context and interviewing for stories, not opinions
  • Turn field notes into evidence, insights, and a problem definition worth solving
  • Generate a genuine range of ideas under constraint, and select by evidence and risk rather than enthusiasm
  • Prototype a question at the cheapest fidelity that can answer it — cheap enough to be wrong
  • Test with real users in the real context, read behaviour rather than praise, and decide: iterate, pivot, or stop
  • Carry a surviving idea into a pilot and a business case built on evidence, and run innovation as a system rather than a series of events

Who It's For

Built for the person who must run innovation work — or judge it

Managers and sponsors — who approve innovation budgets, sit in the review meetings where a confident team asks for the next tranche of money, and need to know which evidence a strong project produces.

Product, service, and operations leads — who run improvement and new-offer work inside an organisation and need a process that survives contact with real users, real constraints, and real deadlines.

Internal consultants and change leads — who are handed problems stated as solutions and must get the organisation back to the problem before the money is spent.

Founders and small-business owners — who cannot afford a full-cost failure and need their first version to be a test, not a bet.

No design background is assumed, and no artistic talent of any kind. If you can watch people work, ask a question and listen to the answer, and write a clear paragraph, you have everything this course requires to start.
