Difficult Conversations & Feedback
Signature Course No. 38 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Difficult Conversations & Feedback course, in the Management Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for people who know what needs to be said, have known for three weeks, and have not said it — managers and supervisors who owe their people honest performance conversations, team leads and senior professionals who must raise hard truths with peers, clients, and partners, professionals who dread feedback in both directions, and anyone promoted past the point where silence is an option. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Before You Sit Down: Purpose, Evidence, and an Opening That Does Not Ambush — learn what makes the planned conversation different from live conflict, reduce the conversation to one governing purpose, sort your material into evidence and verdicts and keep only the evidence, separate the person from the problem in your own head first, choose timing, place, and privacy that give the truth a fair hearing, rehearse the hard sentences out loud, open without ambush or a warm-up act, frame the conversation so the other person can genuinely respond, and learn the line you do not cross, finishing with The Prepared Conversation; then, Module 2 — In the Room and After: Say It Plainly, Hear It Fully, Make It Stick — say the true thing plainly and kindly at its true weight, give feedback specific enough to act on, hear the whole response before answering it, hold the standard through defensiveness, anger, tears, and silence, receive feedback without collapse or counterattack, close with an agreement you can check, write the plain record, follow through on the day you named, and repair a conversation that went badly, finishing with The Kept Conversation. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Prepared Conversation and in The Kept Conversation. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fence, stated plainly. Harassment, discrimination, threats, and safety issues are not difficult-conversation practice material. They go to HR and the formal process immediately. This course never teaches handling them as a conversation technique. That fence is not a footnote: if, while preparing any conversation in this course, you uncover conduct in one of those categories — in what you planned to raise, in what the other person discloses, in what you witness along the way — you stop preparing a conversation and you escalate, promptly, under your organization's policy. Concept 9 teaches that line as a working skill, and both capstones test it. This course also gives general education only: it offers no legal advice, and any question about employment law, required process, or what a formal step demands routes to HR — the course teaches conversations, not law. And it is distinct from Signature Course No. 3: Conflict Resolution (Signature Course No. 3) resolves live friction and disputes, often between two parties; this course teaches the planned conversation one person prepares and initiates.
This is the thirty-eighth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Prepare First
The Coach starts by examining the conversation you are carrying — whether your purpose is single, your evidence is clean, and your opening is rehearsed, as they stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Prepared Conversation for Module 1 and The Kept Conversation for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Some conversations at work carry weight: the performance talk you have postponed twice, the feedback a good employee needs and will not enjoy hearing, the hard truth owed to a colleague, a client, or your own manager. This course teaches the planned, one-on-one, high-stakes conversation end to end — preparing what must be said, separating the person from the problem in your own head first, opening without ambush, saying the true thing plainly and kindly, hearing the response in full, giving feedback that is specific enough to use, receiving feedback without collapse or counterattack, and following up so the conversation actually changes something. It is written for managers primarily, and for any professional who must deliver hard truths and would rather do it well than do it late.

Built for managers and professionals who deliver hard truths
Difficult Conversations & Feedback is for managers and supervisors who owe their people honest performance conversations, team leads and senior professionals who must raise hard truths with peers, clients, and partners where no reporting line does the work for them, professionals who dread feedback in both directions — who soften what they give until it means nothing, and brace, argue, or fold when they receive it — and anyone promoted past the point where silence is an option: prepare a difficult conversation with a clear purpose and clean evidence, open without ambush and say the true thing plainly and kindly, give specific, usable feedback and hear the response fully, and receive feedback, follow up, and repair conversations that go badly.
The fence applies here, too. Harassment, discrimination, threats, and safety issues are not difficult-conversation practice material. They go to HR and the formal process immediately. This course never teaches handling them as a conversation technique — and this course is not Conflict Resolution: Conflict Resolution (Signature Course No. 3) resolves live friction and disputes, often between two parties; this course teaches the planned conversation one person prepares and initiates.
