Disease Investigation & Contact Tracing: How Outbreaks Get Stopped
Signature Course No. 305 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
No experience needed — your coach starts where you are.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Disease Investigation & Contact Tracing: How Outbreaks Get Stopped course, in the Risk, Safety & Compliance category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
Outbreaks rarely run on because the disease was mysterious. They run on because a window was guessed instead of derived, a count was quoted with no definition behind it, a name was passed on and cooperation ended, or a setting was declared safe a week before its biology allowed it.
This course teaches the craft by working it. Real ranges and real arithmetic, from your first case definition to a complete outbreak report — windows derived from stated dates, rates computed from stated counts with their denominators attached, notifications worded so no case is ever identifiable, and every claim held to the strength of its evidence.
Then it turns the single case outward to the outbreak. Cases accumulated into a line list and a curve, a shared setting investigated as a cohort with the well counted beside the ill, a source attributed only when the epidemiological, laboratory, and plausibility strands meet, and controls sequenced by route and moment while institutions and reporters are answered without spending anyone's privacy.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — The Single Investigation: One Case, Worked Properly — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Forty-Eight-Hour Case File; then, Module 2 — The Outbreak: Many Cases, One Picture, Controlled and Closed — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Hall Kitchen Outbreak.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Forty-Eight-Hour Case File, a complete case file and notification pack for a confirmed measles case at a primary school, from drawn timeline to stranger-tested record; and The Hall Kitchen Outbreak, a complete outbreak report and control plan for a shared-meal outbreak with household spread, closed by rule with its inheritance written.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. Every disease period is stated as a range, never as a promise about an individual; the course teaches investigation as public-health practice and gives no individual medical advice — personal decisions belong to the person's clinician and to current official guidance; privacy is held at full strength, because it is the mechanism that makes the work possible; and every stipulated figure is a teaching figure you can recompute yourself from the counts beside it.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Disease Investigation & Contact Tracing: How Outbreaks Get Stopped is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. An investigation opens with the decision it exists to make, stated in one sentence before the second fact is gathered. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Forty-Eight-Hour Case File for Module 1 and The Hall Kitchen Outbreak for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Know what the investigation is for before you gather. Every fact tied to the decision it serves, one definition applied to everyone, and every window derived rather than guessed — because most failed investigations are not knowledge failures, they are discipline failures: undefined counts, single-day claims, disclosures that ended cooperation.
Module 1 builds the single investigation. The job, the definition, the timeline, the interview, elicitation, classification, notification, the two separations kept distinct, and the record another investigator can act on.
Module 2 builds the outbreak picture. Line lists and curves, attack rates on true denominators, the setting as a cohort, sources held to their strands, controls in sequence, vulnerable settings adapted, and closure counted in incubation periods.
And it leaves you a record. A case file a stranger can continue on Monday and an outbreak report the next team can inherit — findings at their strength, changes owned and dated, nothing claimed beyond its evidence.
What you will learn
- Run a single case properly: frame the investigation around the transmission it exists to interrupt, apply one case definition in tiers, and derive the exposure window and infectious period from real incubation ranges and stated dates
- Earn the names and protect them: interview for a complete exposure history, elicit contacts without coercion, classify each person by the exposure they actually had, and notify every contact without ever identifying the case
- Read an outbreak honestly: build the line list and epidemic curve, compute and compare attack rates on correct denominators, work the shared setting as a cohort, and name a source only when the evidence strands meet
- Control and close by rule: sequence control measures by route and timing, adapt the work where people cannot separate themselves, close by the two-incubation rule, and leave an after-action record the next outbreak can inherit

Built for people whose work arrives as a phone call
Health-department investigators and the staff who work alongside them — nurses, environmental health staff, and programme staff who carry cases and outbreaks at departmental standard.
School and occupational health staff — who run the first hours of an investigation inside their own institution before the health department takes the lead, and need the first hours done right.
Practitioners preparing for investigation work — whose job puts them on the phone or at the door when a case is reported. The course assumes no clinical qualification and teaches none; it assumes a set of facts, a calendar, and a telephone.

Before you enroll
What is a Socratic coaching session?
A conversation, not a video. Your coach asks a question; you answer — out loud by voice, or by typing — and the coach responds to what you said: naming the misconception it hears, affirming what you got right, and asking the next question. You advance only when you have mastered each concept, so a finished course means the learning held.
How long does it take — and how long do I have?
About 30 minutes per concept. Learn in sittings of any length; your progress is saved as you go. You have a full year from purchase to finish, and you can revisit and retake within that year.
What does the certificate verify?
That you completed every concept and both capstones of this course. Anyone can confirm a Cognosco certificate online — enter its certificate ID on our verification page.
What if it isn't for me — what are the refunds?
If you have not started, cancel for a full refund within seven days of purchase. Once you have started, there is no cash refund — stop before finishing and we credit the full amount you paid toward any other course in the library (credit valid one year from your original purchase). Once you complete the course, no refund or credit applies.
