E-Commerce Essentials: Selling Online

Signature Course No. 190 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's E-Commerce Essentials: Selling Online course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for first-time sellers who want the operation built right before the first order exposes what is missing — for marketplace sellers moving to their own storefront, or the reverse — for makers and small producers whose craft is strong and whose shopkeeping has never been taught as a system, and for owners of a physical shop adding an online channel, who already know retail and need the distance version of it.

It works in the order a real shop meets it. First, Module 1 — Open a Shop That Can Make Money — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Opening Plan; then, Module 2 — Run the Shop, Then Grow It Carefully — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Operations Audit.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Opening Plan and in The Operations Audit. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Every figure in this course can be checked with a pencil. You work throughout on one small shop and one complete set of per-order economics, stated once and used unchanged — so every margin, discount, return, and growth test you meet can be rebuilt from the same honest numbers.

Trust is the product behind the product. A buyer at a distance cannot touch the goods or meet the seller — so the honest photograph, the complete description, the full price shown early, the tracked parcel, the fair return, and the answered message are one long substitute for standing across a counter, and this course builds each of them deliberately.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete opening plan for a new product line, and a full operations audit and steadying plan for the same shop a year later — written to be usable on the real job, not just in the course.

This is the one hundred and ninetieth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the bet every online shop begins as — a product chosen on affection alone. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Opening Plan for Module 1 and The Operations Audit for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Selling online looks like the easiest business in the world to start: no lease, no shopfront, no opening hours. Open an account, photograph a product, press publish.

That ease is real — and it is also the trap. Everything a physical shop gets from its building, the online seller must build deliberately: the listing must announce you, the photographs and description must let a buyer judge what she cannot touch, and your messages, policies, and returns process must do the work the assistant at the counter once did.

Your unit economics must do the work the till once did — making the price final and the cost of the day visible. Most new sellers never compute them at all. In this course you compute them first, and price from them.

Then you run the shop: fulfilment, packing, shipping, and returns as written systems; service at a distance; reviews earned honestly and protected; and the handful of numbers that tell you weekly — not at year-end — whether the shop is healthy, drifting, or quietly losing money on every order it celebrates.

What you will learn

  • Choose what to sell and where to sell it, using fit, demand, margin, and control — not enthusiasm alone
  • Set up an online shop completely: accounts, policies, taxes and records, and the details buyers check before they trust you
  • Price every product from your own full per-order costs, so each sale contributes a known amount
  • Write listings that sell truthfully — findable titles, honest images, complete descriptions
  • Build a checkout a stranger can trust, with the full cost visible before payment
  • Run fulfilment, packing, shipping, and returns as written systems that survive a busy week
  • Serve customers at a distance and earn reviews honestly, then protect the reputation they create
  • Read the shop's numbers weekly and grow the shop carefully, one tested change at a time

Who It's For

Built for the seller behind the listing

E-Commerce Essentials: Selling Online is for first-time sellers with a product or a product idea, marketplace sellers moving to their own storefront or the reverse, makers and small producers selling what they make, owners of a physical shop adding an online channel,

and managers handed an existing online shop — who must read its numbers, find its leaks, and steady it before they grow it.

Every figure in the teaching is drawn from the running shop's stated economics, so you are always working on real, checkable numbers. If you can multiply a price by a percentage and write a clear paragraph, you have everything this course requires to start.

This is a Sales, Service & Revenue course. It assumes no prior selling experience and no technical background beyond ordinary confidence with a web browser and a spreadsheet.
