Email Writing That Gets Replies

Signature Course No. 185 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Email Writing That Gets Replies course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for office and operations staff who carry a business's correspondence on their shoulders — for managers and team leads whose email sets tone for whole threads — for client-facing professionals whose next job is often decided by how the last job's email felt to receive — and for anyone whose requests keep stalling, who writes carefully, sends politely, and hears nothing.

It works in the order a message is met: first, Module 1 — The Single Email, Written to Be Answered — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with One Project, Five Emails; then, Module 2 — Sequences, Strangers, and Difficult Messages — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with A Project in Trouble, Handled in Writing.

Every message gets one job, named honestly in its subject line. You do not finish a concept by agreeing with it. You finish it by writing the message a fresh situation needs — the subject line that tells the truth usefully, the first line that carries the news, the one ask a reader can grant in one motion — without help, to a stated standard.

One running business carries the teaching: Cinderford Joinery, a small workshop making kitchens, staircases, and fitted furniture, and the people who write its email — chiefly Sonia Reyes, who runs the office, and Colin Mercer, who runs the workshop floor — so every move is practised on complete messages, good and bad, printed whole.

You finish by proving the whole course — in One Project, Five Emails and in A Project in Trouble, Handled in Writing. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete set of working emails for one live project, and a planned sequence of difficult messages for a project in trouble, written in full and defended in writing — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.

This is the one hundred and eighty-fifth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with your own sent folder. Most email fails before it is read — in the subject line, the first line, or the ask nobody could find. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — One Project, Five Emails for Module 1 and A Project in Trouble, Handled in Writing for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Email is the written form of working relationships, and it is judged the way relationships are judged: quickly, partly, and on small evidence. The reader who opens your message is busy, is reading among thirty other messages, and owes you nothing beyond the seconds the subject line bought. Inside those seconds, everything is decided: whether the message gets read now, later, or never; whether the request inside it is granted, deferred, or quietly allowed to die; and whether the writer is filed, in the reader's mind, under easy to deal with or under hard work.

This course teaches you to write email that respects those seconds and earns what it asks for. You will learn to give every message one job and to name it honestly in the subject line; to open with the news, not the weather; to build messages a skimming reader can act on; to ask for exactly one thing, in a form the reader can grant in one motion; to keep messages as short as the job allows and no shorter than courtesy requires; to control tone deliberately, including when the news is bad, the answer is no, the fault is yours, or the stakes have to rise.

You will learn to follow up with persistence that helps rather than nags; to write to strangers in a way that earns a first reply; and to run the checking passes that catch the wrong name, the missing attachment, and the sentence that reads colder than you meant it — before the reader does.

What you will learn

  • Give every email one job, and name that job honestly in the subject line
  • Open with a first line that carries the news and earns the second line
  • Structure messages so a skimming reader can act without re-reading
  • Make one clear ask — specific, owned, and dated — that a reader can grant in one motion
  • Control length and tone deliberately, in routine messages and difficult ones alike
  • Write in plain, accessible language a tired reader can follow the first time
  • Proofread in passes that catch meaning, facts, and tone before you send
  • Keep threads clean, follow up with grace, and write cold introductions that earn replies
  • Handle the difficult messages — chasing, declining, apologising, escalating — and repair threads that have gone wrong

Who It's For

Built for the person whose inbox carries the work

Email Writing That Gets Replies is for office and operations staff — who carry a business's correspondence on their shoulders: quotes, schedules, suppliers, invoices, apologies, and chases, often all before lunch, managers and team leads — whose email sets tone for whole threads, and whose vague asks and public corrections do damage out of proportion to their length,

client-facing professionals — consultants, designers, tradespeople, advisers — whose next job is often decided by how the last job's email felt to receive — and anyone whose requests keep stalling — who writes carefully, sends politely, and hears nothing, and wants to know which part of the message is failing them.

Every concept is taught as a practised move and proven on a fresh situation: one job per email, the honest subject line, the first line carrying the news, and the final send check that stands between your draft and your reader.

This is a Communication & Influence course. It assumes you already write email every day and can operate your own mail program without help. It teaches no technology and requires none beyond a notebook.
