Engineering Project Management

Signature Course No. 159 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Engineering Project Management course, in the Frontline & Industry Leadership category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

You work on one running project throughout — Project Atlas, the design, build, and commissioning of a combined heat-and-power and chilled-water plant for a regional hospital campus, delivered by Wexford Engineering Ltd. — and every figure in the course is stated once, in full, and held constant, so a requirement count, a test total, an earned-value position, or a change account can always be checked by hand against the same set of facts.

This is the course for engineers who run projects — project engineers, engineering project managers, and design leads — and for the leads who run engineering teams, commissioning and integration engineers moving into leadership, and client-side and owner's engineers who specify, review, witness, and accept work delivered by others. It works in two movements: first, Module 1 — From Promise to Baseline: Defining Work That Can Be Proved — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Baseline You Can Defend; then, Module 2 — From Baseline to Handover: Controlling, Integrating and Proving the Build — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Handover You Can Sign.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Baseline You Can Defend and in The Handover You Can Sign.

You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Progress means proved, all the way through — a subsystem counts when it has passed its specified test, at its specified conditions, with the record signed; a baseline changes only by assessed, approved, recorded decision; and a handover is signed only for what the evidence proves, stated at the same size as anything it does not.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete Baseline Defence Pack for Project Atlas at its baseline freeze, and a Commissioning and Handover Pack carrying the same project from a troubled integration to a signed acceptance — documents built to be usable on a real job, not just in the course.

This is the one hundred and fifty-ninth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the promise stated before it is priced. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what you already run well on a live engineering job, and where the common trap is waiting for you — and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the promise, the requirements, and the baseline you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Baseline You Can Defend for Module 1 and The Handover You Can Sign for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

An engineering project is a promise made in technical language: this plant will deliver this output, at these conditions, to this standard, by this date, for this sum — and here is how we will prove each clause of that promise before you are asked to pay for it in full.

Managing such a project is a double discipline. You must manage the ordinary project facts — money, time, people, suppliers — and you must manage the technical facts underneath them: what is required, what has been designed, what has been changed, what has been tested, and what is merely hoped.

Lose the second discipline and the first becomes theatre: budgets consumed on schedule by work that does not integrate, dates met by systems that do not commission, handovers signed for plants that do not perform.

You will learn to write requirements that can be built and proved, to build specifications into a baseline worth defending, to divide a system at its interfaces and control what crosses them, and to run design reviews and gates that actually gate.

Then you will learn the second half of the craft: controlling change on a frozen baseline without freezing the project, integrating subsystems in an order that finds faults while they are still cheap, verifying by test with criteria agreed before the test begins, managing suppliers on technical evidence rather than on assurances, commissioning in sequence, handling nonconformance without hiding it, recording technical decisions so they survive the people who made them, recovering a slipping project without falsifying its baseline, and closing a job so the next project inherits knowledge instead of folklore.

What you will learn

  • State an engineering project's scope as a technical promise — requirements, performance, and proof — and defend that statement against drift
  • Write verifiable requirements and build specifications into a controlled technical baseline
  • Divide a system at its interfaces, control what crosses them, and run design reviews and gates with real entry and exit discipline
  • Plan technical work in dependency order, price technical risk, and read cost and schedule performance against proved progress
  • Hold configuration discipline so the as-designed, as-built, and as-commissioned plant are provably one plant
  • Control change on a frozen baseline — impact assessed technically, commercially, and against the test programme before approval
  • Integrate subsystems, verify by test, and manage suppliers on witnessed technical evidence
  • Commission, hand over, recover a slipping project without falsifying its record, and close it so its lessons transfer

Who It's For

Built for the people who run engineering projects

Engineering Project Management is for engineers who run projects — project engineers, engineering project managers, and design leads who carry cost, programme, and technical outcome together — for leads who run engineering teams, who approve designs, sit on change boards, and sign gates, for commissioning and integration engineers moving into leadership, and for client-side engineers and owner's engineers who specify, review, witness, and accept engineering work delivered by others,

and who need to tell a defended baseline from a decorated one.

The course assumes you can read a drawing, a specification, and a programme, and that you have worked on at least one real engineering job. It assumes no particular management qualification and no allegiance to any one published method. Where established practice has a standard name, the book uses it; where firms differ, the book says so and teaches the underlying move, which does not differ.

If you already run an area well, the test-out route in each concept lets you prove it and move faster — the bar does not drop; the route just gets shorter.
