Excel Without the Headache: Beginner to Advanced

Signature Course No. 103 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Excel Without the Headache: Beginner to Advanced course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work in your own spreadsheet alongside the Coach throughout: the Coach teaches and questions, you build, and what you build is what gets checked.

This is the course for anyone who uses a spreadsheet because the job requires it, without ever having been taught, people who inherit other people's files, anyone whose totals have ever been wrong in a meeting, team members asked to "just pull the numbers," and organizations whose decisions rest on spreadsheets built by guesswork.

It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — The Spreadsheet, Built Right: Structure, Entry, and Core Formulas — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Community Market Workbook; then, Module 2 — From Data to Answers: Summaries, Lookups, and Presentation — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Quarterly Report You Can Hand Over.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Community Market Workbook and in The Quarterly Report You Can Hand Over. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Skills in this course are taught as durable spreadsheet craft that transfers between Excel and other spreadsheet tools, not as version-specific button trivia. Every example dataset in this course is small and invented so the learner can check results by hand.

Nothing in these pages is presented as a quotation from an earlier Cognosco text, because there isn't one, and nothing is copied from any marketplace course, tutorial library, or other publisher. Wherever a number can be calculated, this course calculates it — typed-in totals, hand-copied figures, and values pasted over formulas are treated throughout as defects, not shortcuts.

A formula written into a badly structured sheet produces a precise wrong answer, faster. Macros and scripting, array formulas beyond the everyday, Power Query-style data pipelines, and financial modeling technique are outside this course's scope.

This course carries no certification claim from Microsoft and no examination-preparation claim; Microsoft is named only as the maker of Excel.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a finished market workbook a treasurer can operate without its builder in the room, and a quarterly report on your own real work, summarized, charted, checked, and ready to hand over — not just ideas about spreadsheets.

This is the one hundred and third course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with structure, not formulas. A spreadsheet is a structure that calculates — and if the structure is wrong, every number it produces is wrong with confidence. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Community Market Workbook for Module 1 and The Quarterly Report You Can Hand Over for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Almost every job now runs, in part, through a spreadsheet — a budget, a roster, a price list, an inventory count, a schedule, a set of results someone has to explain in a meeting. Yet most people were never actually taught to use one. They picked it up by watching a colleague, by copying an old file, by trial and error at eleven at night before a deadline.

This course ends that. It teaches the spreadsheet as a craft, in order: structure first, so the sheet is sound before anything is calculated; formulas second, so the numbers are produced by the sheet and not typed into it; answers third, so sorting, summarizing, and looking things up turn raw lists into decisions; and presentation last, so the finished work is clear, checked, and safe to hand to another person.

By the end you will be able to start from a blank page, build a workbook that holds together, and produce results you have verified yourself — the single biggest workplace software skill, learned properly, once.

What you will learn

  • Build clean, well-structured spreadsheets from a blank page
  • Use the core formulas and functions that do real work
  • Sort, filter, and summarize data with tables and pivot-style summaries
  • Present results clearly — formatting, charts, and work you have error-proofed

Who It's For

Built for the person holding the spreadsheet

Excel Without the Headache: Beginner to Advanced is for anyone who uses a spreadsheet because the job requires it, without ever having been taught — who can enter numbers and copy a formula, but holds their breath when something has to be sorted, totaled, or explained, people who inherit other people's files — the budget, roster, or tracker passed down from the last person in the role, full of formulas nobody dares to touch and errors nobody can find, anyone whose totals have ever been wrong in a meeting — or who fears they might be,

team members asked to "just pull the numbers" — to summarize a list, compare two lists, find who bought what, or turn a month of records into one clear page, and organizations whose decisions rest on spreadsheets built by guesswork — where the same figures are typed in three places, disagree in all three, and no one can say which one is right.

Skills in this course are taught as durable spreadsheet craft that transfers between Excel and other spreadsheet tools, not as version-specific button trivia. Every example dataset in this course is small and invented so the learner can check results by hand. Wherever a number can be calculated, this course calculates it — typed-in totals, hand-copied figures, and values pasted over formulas are treated throughout as defects, not shortcuts.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course and it assumes no prior course, only a computer with a spreadsheet program. If you can open Excel or Google Sheets and type into a cell, you have everything this course requires to begin.

You do not need mathematics beyond ordinary arithmetic, and you do not need any earlier experience with formulas — the course builds them from the first equals sign.
