Excel VBA & Macros: Automate Your Spreadsheets
Signature Course No. 188 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Excel VBA & Macros: Automate Your Spreadsheets course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you.
It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work in your own workbook alongside the Coach throughout: you type every code listing yourself, run it, and check its result against your own screen.
This is the course for office and operations staff who run the same reports, cleanups, and checks on a cycle, analysts and finance staff who already live in Excel, small-business owners and managers who depend on a handful of key workbooks, and team leads who inherit other people's macro workbooks and need to read, repair, and share them safely.
It works in the order the work itself runs: first, Module 1 — From Recording to Writing — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Weekly Pack, Automated; then, Module 2 — Automation a Team Can Trust — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Shared Routine.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Weekly Pack, Automated and in The Shared Routine. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Some spreadsheet work should be done by hand, once, with your full attention. And some of it should never be done by hand again — the same header formatted the same way every Monday, the same rows checked against the same rule every Friday, the same summary copied to the same sheet every month-end. Done by hand, that work is slow, dull, and quietly error-prone — not because the person doing it is careless, but because repetition is where care goes to die.
You start where every working macro writer starts: the recorder, which watches what you do and writes the code for you. You learn where that code lives, how to read it, and how to cut the recorder's waste out of it until it says only what you meant. Then you write code the recorder never could — code that stores values in named variables, chooses between actions, repeats an action across every row you have, asks the person at the keyboard a question and acts on the answer, and survives a mistake without dying silently.
Every code listing in the course is meant to be typed and run — complete enough to do exactly what the text around it says it does, with its inputs and results stated so you can check the course against your own screen.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a cleaned, hand-finished automation pack for a weekly workbook, and a shared, secured, documented routine a whole small team can run — not just ideas about automation.
This is the one hundred and eighty-eighth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you already automate, what you still do by hand, and where the common trap is waiting for you. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill — by writing code that does the job, not by describing code that would. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Weekly Pack, Automated for Module 1 and The Shared Routine for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Some spreadsheet work should be done by hand, once, with your full attention. And some of it should never be done by hand again: the same header formatted the same way every Monday, the same forty rows checked against the same rule every Friday, the same summary copied to the same sheet every month-end.
This course teaches you to hand that work to Excel itself, through macros and the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) language they are written in.
First, the recorder and the editor — record a macro, save it in a workbook that keeps its code, find it again, and read its code well enough to edit it with confidence.
Then, the language itself — named variables and types, references that name their sheet, decisions with their boundaries ruled, loops that do the repeating, and procedures and custom functions that divide big jobs into named, reusable steps.
Last, the discipline that decides whether automation helps a workplace or endangers it — errors handled and debugged systematically, a usable face of buttons and simple questions, workbooks that react when they open, and macro workbooks organised, documented, and shared with security judged with clear eyes.
What you will learn
- Record, run, save, and re-find macros, in workbooks that keep their code
- Work inside the VBA editor and read recorded code well enough to edit it with confidence
- Use variables, constants, and data types so code works with named values instead of fixed ones
- Refer to cells, ranges, worksheets, and workbooks in code, precisely and without relying on what happens to be selected
- Write decisions and loops so one procedure does the checking and repeating you used to do by hand
- Build procedures and custom functions that divide big jobs into named, reusable steps
- Handle errors and debug code systematically instead of by guesswork
- Give macros a usable face — buttons, messages, and simple questions — and automate workbooks that react when they open
- Organise, document, and share macro workbooks, and judge macro security and trust with clear eyes

Built for the person the repetition lands on
Excel VBA & Macros: Automate Your Spreadsheets is for office and operations staff — who run the same reports, cleanups, and checks on a cycle and want the cycle to run itself, analysts and finance staff — who already live in Excel and want to turn a morning of copying and checking into a reviewed, repeatable procedure, small-business owners and managers — who depend on a handful of key workbooks and want them robust, documented, and usable by more than one person,
and team leads — who inherit other people's macro workbooks and need to read, repair, and share them safely.
The course assumes worksheet fluency: formulas, cell and range addresses, tables, sorting and filtering at the sheet, and ordinary file handling.
It assumes no programming experience of any kind. Every code idea is introduced from zero, in workbook terms, on work you will recognise.
