Finance for Non-Financial Managers
Signature Course No. 50 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Finance for Non-Financial Managers course, in the Business Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for managers and team leads who receive a monthly P&L they cannot yet explain, department heads and project leads who must build and defend a budget, capable operators preparing a business case, and owners and senior managers in smaller companies. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Reading the Business: The P&L, the Balance Sheet, and Cash — separate revenue from profit, read the P&L line by line as a staircase, compute the three margins and their gaps, read the balance sheet as what we own, what we owe, and what is left, follow why cash is not profit, trace the cash flow statement to the bank balance, classify costs by how they behave, find break-even, and read a few ratios honestly, finishing with The Statements, Read Aloud; then, Module 2 — Using the Numbers: Budgets, Unit Economics, and the Business Case — compute your department's unit economics, build a budget from stated assumptions, decompose a variance and explain it in the room without excuses, price what a price cut really costs, build a business case with costs whole and benefits admitted only with mechanisms, walk a payback year by year, ask your finance partner better questions, and sign your own numbers standard, finishing with The Case That Holds Up. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Statements, Read Aloud and in The Case That Holds Up. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fence, stated plainly. This course is financial education, not financial advice. It teaches managers to read and use business financial information; it does not tell anyone what to invest in, how to handle their taxes, or whether a specific company is a good or bad bet. Every company, figure, and statement in the course is fictional and illustrative, and every computation is shown in full so you can check it yourself. The signature is the course's own: this course works on your own department's numbers — bring real work, anonymized, and the Coach makes you read it, concept by concept, until you can explain it out loud. One rule protects that signature, and it is absolute: do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a one-page statements reading and a meeting-ready business case — not just ideas about numbers.
This is the fiftieth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Read the Statements
The Coach starts by examining the numbers you actually manage — what your statements say, where the gaps in your reading are, and which figures you have been quoting without checking, as they stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Statements, Read Aloud for Module 1 and The Case That Holds Up for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most managers are handed financial statements they were never taught to read — and then judged on numbers they cannot explain. This course teaches a manager to read the business's finances without fear and to use them without bluffing. You will learn to read a profit and loss statement line by line, to say what a balance sheet actually shows in plain terms, and to explain why a profitable business can still run out of cash. You will learn your own department's unit economics, how to build a budget you can defend, and how to have a variance conversation without excuses. And you will learn to make the business case for a hire, a purchase, or a project — costs whole, benefits honest, break-even shown — and to ask your finance partner better questions than "is there money for this?" The course works on your own department's numbers throughout: bring real statements and budgets, anonymized, and leave able to explain them.

Built for managers who were never taught to read the numbers
Finance for Non-Financial Managers is for managers and team leads who receive a monthly P&L for their area and could not explain three lines of it afterward; department heads and project leads who must build a budget, defend it, and answer for the gap when the actual argues with the plan; capable operators preparing a business case for a hire, a purchase, or a project; and owners and senior managers in smaller companies who want the statements to stop being a report they receive and become a tool they use: read a P&L, a balance sheet, and a cash flow statement in plain terms, explain margins and break-even without jargon, build a budget and explain a variance honestly, and make a case that holds up.
The fence and the signature apply here, too. This course is financial education, not financial advice, and it works on your own department's numbers: bring real statements and budgets, anonymized — do not paste anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem — and leave able to explain them. The course assumes you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide; it does not assume accounting training.
