Financial Analysis & Modeling
Signature Course No. 118 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Financial Analysis & Modeling course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for managers who sit in budget reviews and board discussions where figures are quoted at them, analysts inside companies, banks, and investment firms whose models other people bet money, jobs, and plans on, owners and founders who must read their own business in its numbers before a lender, a buyer, or a hard quarter reads it for them, and operators moving into finance-facing roles who already make decisions with financial consequences.
It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Reading the Business in Its Statements — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Diagnostic Read; then, Module 2 — Building Models That Deserve Trust — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Model You Can Defend.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Diagnostic Read and in The Model You Can Defend. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
This course runs on one company, one set of books, and nothing else — Harlow Ridge Supply Co., a fictional regional distributor whose complete financial statements are stated once, in full, in Concept 2, so every ratio in the course is computed from those figures, every forecast starts from them, and every valuation prices them.
No concept invents a second company with friendlier numbers, and no worked example quietly swaps in a different revenue figure because the arithmetic was easier. If a number appears in Concept 14, you can trace it back to the statements in Concept 2 and check it yourself with a pencil.
And the second decision that runs through the whole course: a model is an argument, not an answer — every model here is built to be interrogated, bounded, and defended, not merely admired.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete diagnostic read of a company's statements, closing with a borrowing verdict a lender, an owner, or a board could act on, and your own small integrated forecast and valuation of the same company under a changed scenario, defended in writing on one honest page — not just ideas about modeling.
This is the one hundred and eighteenth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the interlock, not the bottom line. The three statements are one system — performance, position, and cash — and every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what you already read well, and where the common trap is waiting for you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Diagnostic Read for Module 1 and The Model You Can Defend for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every business tells its story twice: once in words, and once in numbers. The words are the pitch, the plan, the confident meeting. The numbers are what actually happened — what was sold, what it cost, what is owed, what is owned, and whether any cash survived the journey.
This course teaches you to read the second story fluently and then to write its next chapter honestly. You will learn how the three financial statements interlock, why profit is an opinion and cash is a fact, how margins, liquidity, leverage, and returns each answer a different question, and how to tell earnings you can trust from earnings that merely look good.
Then you will build: forecasts driven by the real engines of a business rather than by trend lines, integrated models in which the three statements move together, scenarios that show which assumptions own the answer, and valuations — by multiples and by discounted cash flow — stated with their limits attached.
Finally, you will learn the craft that separates a model people can use from a model people merely admire: hygiene, error-hunting, and the one-page presentation that lets a busy reader check your work and trust it.
What you will learn
- Read the three financial statements and explain how they interlock
- Analyze margins, liquidity, leverage, and returns — and state what each measure can and cannot prove
- Judge the quality of earnings and the strength of cash conversion
- Build an integrated three-statement forecast from business drivers
- Value a business with multiples and discounted cash flow, with the limits of each stated plainly
- Build models others can audit — clean structure, built-in checks, errors hunted down
- Present a model as a one-page story a decision-maker can test and trust
Everything in the course

Built for the person who must judge — and build — the numbers
Financial Analysis & Modeling is for managers — who sit in budget reviews and board discussions where figures are quoted at them, and who need to know which question each figure actually answers and which it dodges, analysts — inside companies, banks, and investment firms — whose models other people bet money, jobs, and plans on, and who need those models to deserve the bet, owners and founders — who must read their own business in its numbers before a lender, a buyer, or a hard quarter reads it for them,
and operators moving into finance-facing roles — budget holders, division leads, project managers — who already make decisions with financial consequences and want the literacy to make them on evidence.
This course assumes comfort with arithmetic and a willingness to work with a spreadsheet. It assumes no accounting degree and no prior modeling experience. If you can read a table and multiply a percentage, you have everything this course requires to start — the rest is built here, concept by concept, on one company you will come to know very well.
