How Markets Actually Work

Signature Course No. 105 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's How Markets Actually Work course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for anyone whose retirement plan is a mystery to them, first-time investors and the about-to-start, employees offered a workplace plan for the first time, and anyone who has been burned, scared, or sold to.

It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — How Markets Work: The Machinery and the Main Players — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The First Statement; then, Module 2 — Investing With Both Eyes Open: Risk, Diversification, and Your Own Framework — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with My Investing Framework.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The First Statement and in My Investing Framework. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This course is financial literacy, not financial advice. It does not tell you what to buy, what to sell, or what to hold. There are no tips in this course, no picks, no predictions, and no promised returns — not in the teaching, not in the practice scenarios, and not in the capstones.

If you finish this course looking for a recommendation, you will be disappointed on purpose. Every figure in the course is a round, clearly labeled illustration of arithmetic — how compound growth works as pure math, how a small annual fee compounds into a large drag — not a claim about what any investment will do.

Real investments do not grow at a steady anything. And past performance is not a promise: A fund, a stock, or a market that did well last year has told you what happened last year. It has not told you what happens next year.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a fully read statement — a classification table, a contribution walk-through, a quarter reading, and a spoken explanation of a real position — and your own one-page written investing framework, principles and questions, not a portfolio and not a recommendation.

This is the one hundred and fifth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the machinery, not the noise. A market is a meeting place running on agreements, and a price is the last agreement, not a verdict. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The First Statement for Module 1 and My Investing Framework for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Most people meet financial markets through noise — a headline about a record high, a coworker talking about a stock, a retirement-plan statement full of names they never chose on purpose.

This course is the calm alternative an employer can offer its people: plain, accurate literacy about what markets are, what stocks, bonds, and funds actually are, what risk and diversification really mean, and how to build a steady long-term framework around goals, costs, and time horizon.

It assumes no prior knowledge and no money to invest yet. By the end, you will be able to read market news without being pushed around by it, understand the statement from your own retirement plan, and make your own decisions — slowly, in writing, and with both eyes open.

What you will learn

  • Understand what financial markets are, who is in them, and what moves them
  • Know the main asset classes — stocks, bonds, and funds — and how they differ
  • Grasp risk, return, volatility, and diversification in plain terms
  • Build a sane long-term framework — goals, costs, time horizon, and steady behavior

Who It's For

Built for the person reading the statement

How Markets Actually Work is for anyone whose retirement plan is a mystery to them — who contributes every payday, glances at a balance they cannot explain, and could not say what they actually own or why, first-time investors and the about-to-start — people opening a first account, receiving a small inheritance, or rolling over an old plan, who want to understand the machinery before any money moves, employees offered a workplace plan for the first time — who must choose whether to contribute, how much, and among options with unfamiliar names,

on a deadline, with no one to ask, and anyone who has been burned, scared, or sold to — who panicked in a downturn, bought something on a tip they did not understand, or sat through a sales pitch that moved faster than their questions.

This course is financial literacy, not financial advice. It does not tell you what to buy, what to sell, or what to hold. There are no tips in this course, no picks, no predictions, and no promised returns — not in the teaching, not in the practice scenarios, and not in the capstones.

This is a Sales, Service & Revenue course and it assumes nothing: no earlier Signature Course, no finance background, and no money to invest yet. If you have ever read a market headline and wondered what it actually meant for you, you have everything this course requires.

It works from your own real statement and your own real goals, one concept at a time — literacy that sells you nothing.
