Financial Risk Management Basics

Signature Course No. 196 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Financial Risk Management Basics course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

Every operating business is a bundle of promises that can break. Customers promise to pay. Suppliers promise to deliver at a price. Machines promise to keep running. The bank balance promises to be there on payday. Risk management is the discipline of asking, before the fact and in cold blood, three questions about every promise: what exactly breaks if this goes wrong, how much does it cost us when it does, and what have we deliberately done — in advance, on purpose — to keep a breakage from becoming a catastrophe?

You learn to see the risk clearly. Risk as exposure times uncertainty, with every exposure specific in item, amount, and period; one running business learned whole, its ledger stated once and used everywhere; the four families of risk sorted by cause; expected loss as the common currency, with the bad-year question asked beside every average; and concentration and correlation, the shared causes that turn single failures into combined ones.

Then you act on it deliberately. Credit control as a system of terms, checks, and limits; price risk sized from usage; hedging in its plainest form; insurance read as risk transfer, in slices; limits drawn in advance with early warnings; stress scenarios built from your own ledger; and the first seventy-two hours when a risk bites — cash first, facts second, people third.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Seeing the Risk Clearly — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Register That Tells the Truth; then, Module 2 — Acting on the Risk Deliberately — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Plan That Survives the Bad Month.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Register That Tells the Truth, a complete risk register for the running business with its two breached limits carried openly and a decision on every line; and The Plan That Survives the Bad Month, a stress-tested risk plan for the same business, rehearsed against its combined bad month and defended in writing.

The numbers discipline is part of the course. The course runs on one business and one risk ledger, and nothing else: every expected loss is computed from those figures, every probability is a planning estimate labelled as one, and the one simplified figure is the business's own teaching model — never market data.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This is the one hundred and ninety-sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. A business is rarely hurt by the risk it was watching — it is hurt by the exposure it never named, the concentration it never added up, or the cash date it never checked. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Register That Tells the Truth for Module 1 and The Plan That Survives the Bad Month for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Risk is exposure times uncertainty. An exposure must be specific to be real — item, amount, and period — or it cannot be priced, limited, insured, or rehearsed. Vague risks produce vague responses.

Module 1 makes you see it. One business, one ledger: the receivables book in three buckets, expected losses rebuilt by hand, two limits already breached, the four families sorted by cause, and liquidity understood as cash timing, not profit.

Module 2 makes you answer it. Credit control in its proper order, price risk sized from usage, a price locked on purpose, cover read as slices with residues, and limits that warn before they bite.

And it rehearses the bad month. Single, combined, and reverse stress scenarios totalled against cash and walked by Fridays; the four decisions — accept, reduce, transfer, avoid; and the first seventy-two hours run cash first, facts second, people third.

What you will learn

  • Name the risks an operating business carries and sort them into the four families — credit, market and price, operational, and liquidity
  • Measure an exposure in expected-loss terms: exposure, probability, and loss given the event
  • Spot concentration and correlation, and explain in plain terms why they turn single failures into combined ones
  • Build and keep a risk register with owners, limits, and review dates
  • Run the operator's responses: credit control, plain hedging, insurance as risk transfer, and limits with early warnings
  • Build single, combined, and reverse stress scenarios from your own ledger, and act on what they show
  • Respond when a risk bites — protect cash first, communicate early, and record what the event taught the register

Who It's For

Built for the people who carry a business's risks

Owners and operators — who carry the business's risks personally whether they have named them or not, and who need a ledger, a set of limits, and a rehearsed response instead of a vague sense of worry.

Finance managers and bookkeepers in operating businesses — who see the receivables, the fuel bills, and the bank balance first, and who need the language and the arithmetic to turn what they see into decisions.

Sales and operations managers, and anyone inheriting a budget or a customer book — whose daily choices about terms, customers, suppliers, and stock are risk decisions, whether or not anyone has ever called them that. This is a course about risk for a business operator — not investment advice, and not a course about picking securities.
