Financial Statement Analysis: Read the Numbers Like an Analyst

Signature Course No. 104 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Financial Statement Analysis: Read the Numbers Like an Analyst course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for managers who receive financial results and must act on them, salespeople who sell to businesses and must judge a customer's health before extending effort, terms, or trust, owners and aspiring owners, professionals who work alongside finance, and anyone preparing to talk with a lender, investor, or board.

It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — The Three Statements: Reading the Story They Tell Together — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Full Read — Northfield Under the Lens; then, Module 2 — The Analyst's Eye: Ratios, Cash, and Judgment — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Analyst Brief — A View You Can Defend.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Full Read — Northfield Under the Lens and in The Analyst Brief — A View You Can Defend. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

One invented company, with one consistent set of small financial statements, runs through the whole book — Northfield Supply Co., whose statements are printed in full and used, unchanged, in concept after concept, so you can check every piece of arithmetic by hand, against the same page, and catch the book if it is wrong. Every ratio in this course is calculated from those same numbers.

This course uses no real companies, no market statistics, and no borrowed cases. No real business, living or failed, is analyzed or described anywhere in the book; no market, industry, or survey figures are quoted, because none could be stood behind from inside the drafting process; and no passage offers or implies investment, lending, or purchasing advice about any real security or business.

Ratios are graded against the company's own trend, its plan, its peers in the same trade, and its lenders' terms — never against a universal list. And the boundary: This is analysis education, never investment advice.

It does not tell you — or any learner — to buy, sell, lend to, or avoid any real company, security, or business, and it gives you no basis for doing so. Northfield is fictional. The skill is real.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete full read of a company's statements, bridge and qualifications included, written for a lending manager, and your own one-page analyst brief, written from a full set of statements and defended in your own words — not just ideas about analysis.

This is the one hundred and fourth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the triangle, not the bottom line. Performance, position, and cash are three different questions answered by three different statements, and every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what you already read well, and where the common trap is waiting for you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Full Read — Northfield Under the Lens for Module 1 and The Analyst Brief — A View You Can Defend for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Financial statements are the most honest documents a business produces — and most people who receive them read only the bottom line.

This course teaches you to read all three statements together, the way an analyst does: the income statement for performance, the balance sheet for position, and the cash flow statement for proof.

You will learn to turn raw numbers into ratios, trends, and questions; to separate profit from cash and health from flattery; and to finish with a view of a company's performance, health, and risk that you can state plainly and defend line by line. The numbers throughout are small, round, and checkable by hand, because the skill being built is judgment, not calculator speed.

What you will learn

  • Read an income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement as one connected story
  • Use ratios and trends to judge performance, health, and risk
  • Connect the numbers to cash — profit versus cash, and working capital
  • Form an analyst's view — the right questions, the red flags, and a conclusion you can defend

Who It's For

Built for the person who must judge the numbers

Financial Statement Analysis: Read the Numbers Like an Analyst is for managers who receive financial results and must act on them — who sit in reviews where revenue, margin, and cash are reported, and who want to know which questions change the conversation, salespeople who sell to businesses — who need to judge, before they extend effort, terms, or trust, whether a customer's business is healthy, strained, or quietly in trouble, owners and aspiring owners — who read their own statements, or a business they may join, buy into, or supply,

and want to see what a lender or a buyer will see, professionals who work alongside finance — in operations, purchasing, credit, or leadership — and who are tired of nodding at statements they cannot actually read, and anyone preparing to talk with a lender, investor, or board — who needs to anticipate the hard questions, answer them from the statements, and know which claims the numbers will not support.

This is analysis education, never investment advice. It does not tell you — or any learner — to buy, sell, lend to, or avoid any real company, security, or business, and it gives you no basis for doing so. Northfield is fictional. The skill is real.

This is a Sales, Service & Revenue course, and it assumes comfort with arithmetic — adding, dividing, and working with percentages at the level daily business already demands — and, ideally, Finance for Non-Financial Managers, or equivalent working experience with budgets and business numbers. That foundation helps, but it is not a gate: a determined beginner who works the concepts in order, checks the arithmetic by hand, and uses the hint ladders will finish able to read a set of statements whole.
