GIS & Geospatial Data Basics
Signature Course No. 170 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's GIS & Geospatial Data Basics course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for the professional on the receiving end of map-based work — for managers and executives who approve site, territory, coverage, and service decisions presented as maps — for operations and field leaders who run deliveries, depots, crews, and service areas drawn on maps they did not make — for analysts and planners early in spatial work — and for public-service and nonprofit leaders who allocate clinics, programs, and outreach by neighborhood and must defend those allocations in public.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — How Places Become Data — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Catchment Audit; then, Module 2 — How Maps Argue, and How to Judge the Argument — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Brief That Holds.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Catchment Audit and in The Brief That Holds. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Defending a catchment, questioning a join, explaining why a dark district may only be a populous one — these are spoken acts, and this course lets you practice them that way.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
You will not leave as a software operator. You will leave as a competent commissioner, reader, and judge of spatial work. The course teaches geographic information system categories — desktop GIS, web mapping, spatial databases, field-collection tools — and the concepts that survive every vendor change, not button-by-button walkthroughs for a named product. Every derived distance, area, density, and rate states its units and its approximation first, under a stated convention, so you can recompute every figure yourself.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a spatial audit of a proposed store catchment that a board could act on, and a commissioning brief and acceptance audit for a full territory redesign — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and seventieth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the picture itself. A map looks like a picture of the world. It is, underneath, a database wearing a picture as its coat — and every error in the database survives, beautifully rendered, in the picture. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Catchment Audit for Module 1 and The Brief That Holds for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every business decision with a where in it is a spatial decision, whether the room calls it that or not. Where to open. Whom to serve first. Which depot covers which streets. Where demand is rising, where coverage is thin, where risk concentrates.
Geographic information systems — GIS — are how organizations store, combine, and analyze location data: customer addresses, store sites, delivery routes, service districts, flood zones, census tracts, satellite images, and the boundaries drawn by governments and by companies themselves.
This course teaches the literacy underneath all of it. You will learn how places become data — points, lines, polygons, and grids; how coordinates and map projections place those objects on a curved Earth and onto flat screens, and what each projection quietly distorts; how layers stack and how their attribute tables carry the facts that matter; how addresses are geocoded into points and how points are joined to districts; how buffers and proximity analysis count what lies near a place; how choropleth maps and classification choices can reveal a pattern or manufacture one; how scale and resolution set the limit of what a map may honestly claim; and how the classic spatial pitfalls — wrong projection, mismatched boundaries, the ecological fallacy, the pretty map placed over thin evidence — are caught before they cost money.
What you will learn
- Read spatial data in its basic forms — points, lines, polygons, and grids — and state what each form can and cannot claim
- Judge coordinates, reference systems, and projections, and catch distance and area work done in the wrong one
- Read a layer stack and its attribute tables, and specify layers a decision actually needs
- Judge geocoding quality — match rates, match types, and the records that never became points
- Run and check spatial joins, buffers, and proximity counts under stated conventions
- Read choropleths, classification, counts, rates, and densities without being led by them
- Match scale, resolution, boundaries, and aggregation to the claim being made, and name the classic pitfalls
- Commission map-based work with a brief and acceptance checks a producer can be held to
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of GIS & Geospatial Data Basics, in 2 modules

- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Catchment Audit and The Brief That Holds
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the people who commission, read, and judge spatial work
Managers and executives — who approve site, territory, coverage, and service decisions presented as maps, and who need to know which questions make a map prove itself.
Operations and field leaders — who run deliveries, depots, crews, and service areas drawn on maps they did not make.
Analysts and planners early in spatial work — who commission or review GIS output and need the concepts solid before the software habits form.
Public-service and nonprofit leaders — who allocate clinics, programs, and outreach by neighborhood and must defend those allocations in public.
This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course. It assumes no prior GIS experience and no mathematics beyond arithmetic, percentages, and reading a table. It assumes you have seen maps at work and suspected, at least once, that one of them was more confident than it deserved to be.
