Goal Setting & Achievement: Goals That Stick
Signature Course No. 157 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning’s Goal Setting & Achievement: Goals That Stick course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for managers and team leads who set goals for others as well as themselves, for owners and founders whose company goals cascade into every crew, desk, and shift they run, for individual contributors who are handed goals or asked to propose their own, and for anyone with a personal goal that matters who has set it before and watched it fade.
It works in two halves. First, Module 1 — Setting Goals That Can Be Hit — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Goal Architecture. Then, Module 2 — Running Goals Until They Land — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Mid-Year Reckoning.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Goal Architecture and in The Mid-Year Reckoning. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Scoring a goal honestly and retiring one in the open are spoken acts, and this course practices them that way.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
A goal is a promise stated in advance. This course grades promises the way honest people grade them — by whether they were kept, revised openly, or quietly forgotten. Goals that stick are not goals that were written more beautifully. They are goals that were looked at, told the truth about, and revised in the open instead of abandoned in silence.
Every worked example runs on one business — Larkspur Landscaping Co., a fictional regional landscaping firm with six crews, 250 recurring maintenance clients, and $3,600,000 in annual revenue — so every figure in the course can be recomputed from the facts you are given.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete goal architecture for a real year, and a mid-year review and revision plan for that same goal set under changed conditions — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and fifty-seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the sentence nobody examined. Most goals do not fail in the doing. They fail in the stating — months earlier, in the sentence nobody examined. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Goal Architecture for Module 1 and The Mid-Year Reckoning for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You’ll Learn
Almost everyone has set a goal. Almost no one can show you the system that carried one of theirs from the sentence they wrote to the result they got. Goals fail in predictable places, and this course names all of them.
The goal that was an activity dressed as an outcome; the finish line nobody could see; the target borrowed from someone else’s life and never truly owned; the measure that could be gamed until it meant nothing; the stretch set so high it broke effort or so low it bored it.
The company goal copied word for word onto every team until it belonged to no one; the review that never happened; the score that was softened to keep the peace; the two goals that collided in March and were both still on the wall in October; the stale goal nobody had the standing to retire.
You will learn to set goals that survive contact with a real year: stated as observable end states, measured by numbers that stay honest, owned by one named person, sized to stretch without breaking, broken into milestones, and cascaded so each team holds its own true version.
Then you will learn to run them: reviews on a rhythm, scores that tell the truth, conflicts resolved by decision instead of drift, stale goals renewed, revised, or retired in the open, and feedback conversations that move a goal instead of merely judging a person. The course closes by turning all of it into a habit — a repeatable way of setting and achieving that does not depend on January enthusiasm.
What you will learn
- State a goal as an observable outcome, not an activity, and test whether its finish line can be seen
- Choose measures that stay honest — leading, lagging, and proof against gaming
- Assign one owner to every goal and size the stretch so it challenges without breaking
- Write a complete goal statement and break it into milestones with checkpoints
- Cascade a large goal into team goals that are true versions, not copies
- Run a review rhythm and score progress without lying
- Resolve goal conflicts, and renew, revise, or retire a goal that has gone stale

Built for the person whose goals fade by March
Goal Setting & Achievement: Goals That Stick is for managers and team leads — who set goals for others as well as themselves, and who need team goals that produce ownership instead of eye-rolls — owners and founders — whose company goals cascade, well or badly, into every crew, desk, and shift they run — individual contributors — who are handed goals, or asked to propose their own, and want goals that are genuinely achievable and genuinely worth achieving — and anyone with a personal goal that matters,
a qualification, a health change, a creative project, a career move — who has set it before and watched it fade, and wants to know which joint in the structure gave way.
This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course. It assumes no management title and no prior coursework. If you can describe something you want to be different a year from now, you have everything this course requires to start.
