Grammar & Punctuation for Professionals

Signature Course No. 122 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Grammar & Punctuation for Professionals course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for professionals whose writing represents them when they are not in the room — analysts, operations leads, project coordinators, and specialists whose emails, summaries, and proposals are read by people who have never heard them speak, managers and team leads who write performance notes, incident summaries, and client corrections, early-career professionals whose competence is real but unproven, and experienced writers with one or two persistent habits who need a diagnosis and a repair.

It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — Building Sentences That Hold — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Status Package; then, Module 2 — Punctuation and Polish — Judgment at the Mark — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Client Document.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Status Package and in The Client Document. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

In this course the Voice Coach is not an extra — reading a sentence aloud is one of the oldest and best mechanical checks there is. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Grammar is not a list of traps set by pedants. Most rules in this course exist for one practical reason — they keep a reader from having to read a sentence twice. A professional who knows which rules bend and which never do writes with more confidence, not less, than a professional who treats every comma as a minefield.

A book that teaches correctness cannot afford a misplaced modifier in its own teaching text or a correction that introduces a new error. Where a flawed sentence is shown, it is labeled flawed, the flaw is named, and the corrected version actually corrects it — all of it, not just the part under discussion.

This course is about the layer underneath all of that — the mechanics layer. No rule in this course is taught as obedience for its own sake.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a corrected, publication-ready status package with its editor's note, and a fully edited client document with its style sheet, defended choice by choice — not just ideas about grammar.

This is the one hundred and twenty-second course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the sentence. A reader trusts a writer one sentence at a time — and withdraws that trust the same way. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Status Package for Module 1 and The Client Document for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Ideas at work are judged twice: once on their merit, and once on the prose that carries them. The second judgment is faster, quieter, and often decisive. A reader who stumbles over a run-on sentence, a pronoun with no clear owner, or a comma that changes a sentence's meaning does not usually stop to diagnose the problem. The reader simply trusts the writer a little less and moves on.

This course works on that second judgment. You will learn how a sentence is built and how it breaks; how subjects and verbs agree when intervening words try to separate them; how pronouns, modifiers, and parallel structure keep meaning attached to the words that own it; how tense and voice stay consistent across a document; and how punctuation — commas, semicolons, colons, apostrophes, quotation marks, dashes, and parentheses — functions as a system of signals to a reader rather than as decoration.

Finally, you will learn the professional's closing skill: a final pass that catches what drafting misses, applied the same way every time.

What you will learn

  • Build complete sentences and repair fragments and run-ons on sight
  • Make subjects, verbs, and pronouns agree, and give every pronoun a clear owner
  • Place modifiers and parallel structure so meaning cannot drift
  • Hold tense and voice steady and choose the active voice on purpose
  • Use commas, semicolons, and colons to signal structure, not to decorate
  • Handle apostrophes, quotation marks, dashes, parentheses, and capitalization correctly
  • Apply consistent style to numbers, dates, abbreviations, and commonly confused words
  • Run a repeatable final pass that catches mechanical errors before a reader does

Who It's For

Built for the person whose prose is read in their absence

Grammar & Punctuation for Professionals is for professionals whose writing represents them when they are not in the room — analysts, operations leads, project coordinators, and specialists whose emails, summaries, and proposals are read by people who have never heard them speak, managers and team leads — who write performance notes, incident summaries, and client corrections that must be precise enough to be fair and clear enough to be acted on, early-career professionals — whose competence is real but unproven,

and for whom clean prose is the fastest visible evidence that their work can be trusted, and experienced writers with one or two persistent habits — a comma reflex, an apostrophe uncertainty, a tendency toward fragments under deadline.

Grammar is not a list of traps set by pedants. Most rules in this course exist for one practical reason — they keep a reader from having to read a sentence twice. A book that teaches correctness cannot afford a misplaced modifier in its own teaching text or a correction that introduces a new error. No rule in this course is taught as obedience for its own sake.

This course assumes you write in English at work every week and that you can already get your meaning across in conversation. It assumes no formal grammar study. Terms are introduced only when a decision needs a name, and every term is defined in plain words at the point of use.
