Hiring & Interviewing Skills
Signature Course No. 42 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Hiring & Interviewing Skills course, in the Management Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for everyone who hires — managers and team leads whose next hire decides what their team can do for years, owners and founders who are the hiring department, anyone who sits on interview panels, and experienced interviewers who hire on instinct. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Before the Interview: Define the Job, Set the Criteria, Stay Lawful — define the job in outcomes, write the scorecard first, set the lawful fence, source and screen on the criteria, structure the interview, ask behavioral and situational questions that reveal the work, listen more than you talk, and take notes that record evidence, finishing with The Interview Plan That Holds Up; then, Module 2 — In the Room and After: Ask Well, Listen Hard, Decide on Evidence — run panel interviews with divided roles, let work samples speak, check references and verify claims, score independently against the scorecard, debrief from evidence, spot your own bias in real time, sell the role honestly, and close with a clean offer and a fair no, finishing with The Decision You Can Defend. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Interview Plan That Holds Up and in The Decision You Can Defend. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fence, stated plainly. This course teaches lawful interviewing only. Ask only job-related questions, and judge every candidate against the same criteria, applied the same way. Never ask about — or sort candidates by — race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or anything that stands in for them. Structured evaluation runs on evidence from the interview itself. And one honesty rule travels with the fence: this course is general education about hiring practice, not legal advice — employers follow their own counsel and HR policy. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete interview plan for a real opening and a decision record for a real finalist round — not just ideas about hiring. The course also makes no claims it cannot keep: it names no studies, prints no statistics, and promises no percentages about what a bad hire costs; the cost is taught the way it is experienced — the months lost, the team carrying the gap, the second search run under pressure.
This is the forty-second course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Define the Job → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Define the Job
The Coach starts by examining the hiring you actually do — how your jobs get defined, what your criteria look like before candidates appear, and what your decisions rest on, as they stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Interview Plan That Holds Up for Module 1 and The Decision You Can Defend for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most hiring fails before the interview starts — not because the interviewer could not read people, but because nobody defined the job, set the criteria, or agreed on what evidence would count. This course teaches hiring as a discipline: define the job in outcomes before you meet anyone, build the scorecard before you see a candidate, and run a structured, lawful interview in which every candidate faces the same core questions and is judged on evidence from the interview itself. You will learn to ask questions that reveal the work — what a candidate has actually done and what they would do in the job's real situations — to listen more than you talk, to take notes that record evidence instead of impressions, and to score, debrief, and decide from the record rather than from memory or chemistry. And you will learn to close the process the way you opened it: sell the role honestly, make the offer cleanly, and give every unsuccessful candidate a fair, prompt no. The course teaches lawful interviewing only throughout: job-related questions and criteria, applied consistently to every candidate.

- Run a structured, lawful interview — job-related questions, asked consistently, judged on evidence
- Score, debrief, and decide from the record — not from memory, chemistry, or first impressions
- Close the process well — honest selling, a clean offer, and a fair no to every other candidate

Built for everyone who hires
Hiring & Interviewing Skills is for managers and team leads who hire — whose next hire will decide what their team can do for the next several years; owners and founders who are the hiring department, whose early hires set the culture; anyone who sits on interview panels, whose impressions carry real weight in decisions they only partly own; and experienced interviewers who hire on instinct, whose hit rate is worse than they think: define any job in outcomes and build the scorecard before you meet a candidate, run a structured, lawful interview, score and decide from the record, and close the process well.
The fence applies here, too. This course teaches lawful interviewing only: job-related questions and criteria, applied consistently to every candidate, judged on evidence from the interview itself — and it is general education about hiring practice, not legal advice. The course assumes you will hire someone, someday; it does not assume anyone ever taught you how.
