Instructional Design: Build Courses That People Learn From
Signature Course No. 236 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Instructional Design: Build Courses That People Learn From course, in the People, Culture & Engagement category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
Every organisation runs courses. Very few of them were designed. Most accreted — a deck inherited from the last person in the role, a day filled because a day was booked, topics in the order the expert thought of them — and afterwards comes the most expensive sentence in organisational life: we ran the course and nothing changed. This course teaches you to make the design decisions deliberately.
You learn the design method whole, on one real-shaped commission. Maren Solberg, instructional designer at Loam Studio, is asked by Fernholt Nurseries for "a course on quality" — and instead converts the request into a performance need for 48 new shift leads, sorts the audited gap of 36 errors in 500 orders into its causes, and designs the program that answers it.
Then you close the loop like a professional. Assessment built from the objective itself, materials attention can survive, memory engineered across weeks, the program around the sessions, an honest pilot, evaluation fenced to its evidence, and a launch decision with the design's boundaries stated in the same document.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — From Need to Design — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Fernholt Design Blueprint; then, Module 2 — From Design to Evidence — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Fernholt Launch Decision.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Fernholt Design Blueprint, a complete design a facilitator you have never met could build from; and The Fernholt Launch Decision, the full program design dossier and launch recommendation, ready to put in front of a sponsor.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. This course teaches a design method; it makes no claim that good design guarantees outcomes, and every named model in it is taught as a tool with limits, not as a law. It designs the course itself — the delivery craft is the delivery-effectiveness course, No. 18, and measuring learning impact as an organisational discipline is No. 237.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Instructional Design: Build Courses That People Learn From is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. Design begins when a named performer, a watchable behaviour, real conditions, a measurable standard, and audited evidence are all on one page — and not one slide before. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Fernholt Design Blueprint for Module 1 and The Fernholt Launch Decision for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
A performance need, not a topic. A course built on a topic can only be judged by coverage — and coverage courses are the ones that change nothing, because nothing in them was ever aimed at a behaviour.
Module 1 teaches you to find the question. The need stated observably, the gap sorted into knowledge, skill, will, and system, the learners known in facts, and the engine built: objectives, sequence, method, worked examples, transfer-grade practice, and feedback.
Module 2 keeps the blueprint's promise. Assessment that proves the promised performance, materials and memory and motivation designed honestly, the program around the sessions, and the closing loop of prototype, pilot, evaluation, and revision.
And it holds the designer's standard. Claim only what your evidence reaches, state your design's boundaries unprompted, and leave behind artefacts — a blueprint and a dossier — that a sponsor can judge and a successor can run.
What you will learn
- Start from performance: state the need observably, analyse the gap honestly, and know the learners before choosing anything
- Build the learning engine: objectives a stranger could assess, a sequence that builds, methods matched to objectives, worked examples, transfer-grade practice, and feedback that changes the next attempt
- Prove and sustain it: assessment matched to the objective, materials that respect attention, design for memory and motivation, and the program around the sessions that carries learning back to the job
- Close the loop like a professional: prototype and pilot before scaling, evaluate at the level your evidence reaches, revise from learner work, and hold the designer's standard on a complete program

Built for people who build courses
Learning and development professionals — designers, program leads, and learning-team members who build courses and programs for other people and want a method they can defend line by line.
Subject-matter experts asked to put together a course — the engineer, nurse, supervisor, or specialist whose expertise is real and whose design method, until now, has been the order they learned the material in.
Managers, team leads, and delivery professionals moving upstream — who sign off on programs and want to tell a designed program from a decorated one before the budget is spent, or who keep inheriting courses that do not work and want to build ones that do. The course assumes no prior study of education or psychology, and no mathematics beyond ordinary workplace arithmetic.
