IT Automation: Scripting the Repetitive Work

Signature Course No. 226 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's IT Automation: Scripting the Repetitive Work course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for the practitioner who keeps systems running — systems administrators who run the same checks, reports, and account changes every week, support engineers whose queues mix real incidents with mechanical requests, and IT leads who approve, inherit, or get woken up by automation.

Judgment comes before code, on purpose — you audit your own week and count what you actually find, judge each candidate by frequency, by how completely its rules can be stated, by what it can break, and by how completely a mistake can be undone — and only then build, with the safety disciplines taught as the craft itself: dry runs, backups, rollback, idempotency, error handling, testing before production, and credentials handled as secrets.

Module 1 — See the Work, Script the Safe Core: Judgment, Reading Machines, and the Safety Disciplines — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The First Safe Automation. Then Module 2 — Run It in Production: Provisioning, Verification, Drift, APIs, and Work That Runs While You Sleep — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with An Automation You Can Leave Running.

You finish with a production automation package you could hand to a competent stranger at three in the morning: a first safe automation designed end to end, then a full package — lifecycle, verification, drift, APIs, triage, schedules, runbooks, and a rehearsed recovery — fitted to a real estate.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies.

This is the two hundred and twenty-sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the work itself. Anyone can write a script that works once, on a good day, while they watch it — this course teaches you to choose the right work, read what machines actually say, and build the safety disciplines that make a script worthy of production. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The First Safe Automation for Module 1 and An Automation You Can Leave Running for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every IT practitioner knows this work, because they did some of it this morning: the same log files scanned by eye, the same new-starter accounts created field by field, the same patch report checked server by server, the same backup list eyeballed to confirm last night's jobs ran. Repeated by hand, it is a slow tax on the people a support team can least afford to tax.

First, see the work clearly: audit one ordinary week, count what you actually find, and judge every candidate on frequency, rule-completeness, blast radius, and reversibility — including the judgment to refuse, or to keep a human gate at the dangerous center.

Then, read what machines say: logs triaged by severity, pattern, and first occurrence; signal held apart from noise; text treated as data, with patterns anchored, validated, and tested against the lines designed to fool them.

And the production craft, practiced: provisioning without orphans, patch and backup verification that proves rather than believes, drift found against a kept standard, APIs worked with discipline, triage that never hides real problems, unattended jobs that report on themselves, runbooks a stranger can trust — and an honest, rehearsed answer for the day an automation goes wrong.

What you will learn

  • Audit repetitive systems work and choose what to automate — and what never to automate blindly
  • Write and handle scripts safely: dry runs, backups, rollback, idempotency, error handling, and credentials kept as secrets
  • Read machines reliably: logs, text patterns and regular expressions, APIs, and configuration drift
  • Run automation in production you can defend: tested, scheduled, documented, monitored — and recoverable when it goes wrong

Who It's For

Built for the practitioner who maintains real systems by hand

IT Automation: Scripting the Repetitive Work is for systems administrators who maintain systems by hand — who run the same checks, the same reports, and the same account changes every week, support engineers drowning in drudgery — whose queue mixes genuine incidents with mechanical requests that follow a known path every time,

and IT leads responsible for other people's reliability — who approve, inherit, or get woken up by automation — along with practitioners who have been burned once, and capable hand-workers ready for leverage, who can perform each task correctly by hand and know that this knowledge is the entry fee.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course for practitioners. It assumes working familiarity with the systems you administer — accounts, files, services, logs, and a command line — and the ability to do your candidate tasks by hand. It does not assume you are a programmer, and it does not teach programming as an end in itself.
