The Help Desk in Your Head

Signature Course No. 110 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's The Help Desk in Your Head course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work the craft in realistic support situations throughout: the Coach teaches and questions, you diagnose, decide, and write, and what you produce is what gets checked.

This is the course for people preparing for a first frontline IT support or help desk role, new support technicians in their first months on a desk, office staff, school staff, and small-business generalists who have become the unofficial support desk, career changers aiming at technology work, and team leads and managers who hire, supervise, or evaluate frontline support staff.

It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — The Machine and the Method: How Systems Fit, and How Faults Are Found — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Machine That Would Not Start the Day; then, Module 2 — The Desk and the User: Tickets, People, and Judgment — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with One Brutal Support Day.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Machine That Would Not Start the Day and in One Brutal Support Day, which leaves you with your own support playbook. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

Speaking your answers matters in this course, because support is a spoken craft. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This course is vendor-neutral throughout: product names appear only as passing examples, never as endorsements and never as the method itself, and no operating system, ticket platform, remote tool, or vendor is taught as the method, endorsed, or used as more than a passing example — the principles here survive any specific tool or operating system version, because they are about systems, evidence, and people, not about menus.

This course does not claim to be a hands-on lab: it does not put a broken machine in front of you, it does not simulate an operating system, and it does not pretend that reading about a repair is the same as performing one — a learner who finishes here will still need supervised time on real equipment; what they will not need is to unlearn anything, because nothing here was pretend.

Its boundary with security awareness is drawn by doing versus knowing: awareness is knowing the safe behavior; this course is performing the support work, day after day, at a real desk.

This course carries no certification or examination-preparation claim of any kind.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a calibrated report and record for a machine that would not start the day, and a personal support playbook built on one brutal support day — not just ideas about support.

This is the one hundred and tenth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the job itself, not with fixes. Support is diagnosis, repair, translation, protection, and record, done for a person whose actual work has stopped. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Machine That Would Not Start the Day for Module 1 and One Brutal Support Day for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every organization now runs on computers, and every computer eventually fails in front of someone who has work to do. IT support is the craft that stands in that moment: a person who can understand what the machine is doing, find what has gone wrong without making it worse, fix what can be fixed, explain what happened in words the user can act on, and record the whole thing so the next person — or the same person, next month — starts ahead instead of starting over.

This course teaches that craft whole. You will learn how computers, operating systems, networks, and accounts fit together at the level a support professional must command — not engineering depth, but working depth, the depth that lets you reason about a fault instead of guessing at it. You will learn a troubleshooting method you can run on any problem: gather, isolate, test, fix, verify, document.

You will learn the ticket as the unit of work, how to talk with frustrated people without jargon or condescension, how to work well when you cannot see the desk in front of you, how to protect security in the ordinary acts of the desk, how to judge what to fix and what to escalate — and how to escalate so well that the next level thanks you — and how to build a knowledge base so the same problem is solved once and then solved for everyone.

It is vendor-neutral throughout: the principles here will still be true when every tool you use today has been replaced, because they are about systems, evidence, and people, not about menus.

What you will learn

  • Understand how computers, operating systems, networks, and accounts fit together — well enough to support them
  • Work any problem with a disciplined method: gather, isolate, test, fix, verify, and document
  • Run the desk well: own the ticket, communicate clearly with frustrated users, and support people remotely with confidence
  • Judge escalation, protect security in everyday support work, and build a knowledge base so each problem is solved once

Who It's For

Built for the person the desk counts on

The Help Desk in Your Head is for people preparing for a first frontline IT support or help desk role, new support technicians in their first months on a desk — learning by shadowing and by trial, and wanting the structure that makes the job make sense faster and the mistakes rarer — office staff, school staff, and small-business generalists who have become the unofficial support desk, the person everyone walks to first, career changers aiming at technology work, and team leads and managers who hire, supervise,

or evaluate frontline support staff and want a plain standard for what good support work looks like, so they can recognize it, coach it, and ask for it by name.

This course is vendor-neutral throughout, and it does not claim to be a hands-on lab. Practice here is scenario-based — realistic support situations, with named people, incomplete information, frustrated users, and consequences — because judgment, method, and communication are genuinely built that way, while hands themselves learn by doing the real job.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course and it assumes only everyday confidence using a computer: you can use applications, manage your own files, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow ordinary on-screen instructions. It assumes no prior IT job, no programming, no mathematics beyond everyday numbers, and no particular operating system or product.

If you have ever been the person family members call when something stops working, you have the starting point this course requires.
