Jira & Agile Work Tools

Signature Course No. 133 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Jira & Agile Work Tools course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for team members who live in Jira daily, Scrum masters, team leads, and delivery leads who run the ceremonies, product owners and product managers who own the backlog's order, and managers and stakeholders who read boards and dashboards from outside the team. It works on one running team — Skylark at Tussock Software — whose board, backlog, and sprint history you will come to know in full.

First, Module 1 — Seeing the Work Clearly — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Honest Board Audit; then, Module 2 — Making Flow Work — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Flow Reset. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Jira is the named tool in this course, and Jira is not the subject of this course. The subject is the work system — how a team makes work visible, sizes it honestly, limits how much it starts, finishes it in a sensible order, and tells the truth about what shipped.

A concept that only works while one button stays in one place is not a concept. Story points are never converted into hours. The course runs on one team, one board, and one sprint history, stated once and never quietly changed, and every figure in it recomputes.

It assumes no administrator access, no configuration privileges, and no prior certification. Jira and Atlassian are trademarks of Atlassian Pty Ltd (and its affiliates). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or authorized by Atlassian, and no statement in it should be read as describing Atlassian's official guidance.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a written board audit a lead could act on, and a flow reset with limits, honest views, and a release plan for a real team — not just ideas about boards.

This is the one hundred and thirty-third course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with your own board. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what your board already does well, and where the common trap is waiting for you — and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Honest Board Audit for Module 1 and The Flow Reset for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every team has two jobs. The first is the work itself: the feature to build, the defect to fix, the customer problem to solve. The second is the work of making the work visible — deciding what counts as a piece of work, writing it down so someone else can pick it up, showing honestly where it stands, and knowing what "done" means before anyone claims it.

Jira exists to carry that second job. When it carries it well, a team can answer, at any moment and without a meeting, four questions: What are we doing?

What are we doing next? What is stuck, and why? What did we actually finish? When it carries it badly, Jira becomes the work — a second, shadow job of updating tickets, performing status, and feeding a board that no longer resembles the team's real day — and the team ends up serving the tool that was bought to serve it.

This course teaches you to run real team work in Jira without the tool becoming the work.

You will learn what an issue is and is not; how epics, stories, tasks, subtasks, and bugs divide work at honest sizes; what Scrum and Kanban boards each promise and what every column must honestly mean; how to care for a backlog so it stays a decision instead of becoming a warehouse; how to estimate in story points as relative size, never as hours in disguise; how to plan a sprint around a goal rather than a pile; how to read velocity, burndown, and burnup charts without flattering yourself;

how to build workflows and statuses that tell the truth; how to use filters and JQL as a thinking tool; how to build dashboards people actually read; how WIP limits and flow finish more work than starting more work ever does; how releases and versions turn "done" into "shipped"; and how to recognize and refuse the anti-patterns — ticket theater, status-meeting boards, point inflation — that make a board look busy while the work stalls.

What you will learn

  • Structure work as issues and hierarchy — epics, stories, tasks, subtasks, and bugs — at sizes a team can finish
  • Run Scrum and Kanban boards whose columns honestly mean what they say
  • Keep a backlog ordered and refined so the next work is always a real decision
  • Estimate in story points as relative size and plan sprints around a sprint goal
  • Read velocity, burndown, and burnup honestly, from figures that recompute
  • Build workflows, statuses, filters, JQL queries, and dashboards that tell the truth
  • Improve flow with WIP limits, throughput, and cycle time — and ship through releases and versions on purpose

Who It's For

Built for the team that lives in the board

Jira & Agile Work Tools is for team members — developers, testers, designers, and analysts — who live in Jira daily and want the board to match their real day, Scrum masters, team leads, and delivery leads who are responsible for the health of the system and not just the health of the sprint, product owners and product managers who own the order of the backlog and need forecasts they can repeat without crossing their fingers,

and managers and stakeholders who read boards and dashboards from outside the team and need to know what those views can prove and what they cannot.

Jira is the named tool in this course, and Jira is not the subject of this course. It assumes no administrator access, no configuration privileges, and no prior certification. If you can open a board and read a ticket, you have everything this course requires to start — the rest is built here, concept by concept, on one team you will come to know very well.
