Korean for Beginners: Start Speaking from Day One
Signature Course No. 302 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
No experience needed — your coach starts where you are.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Korean for Beginners: Start Speaking from Day One course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
A complete beginner's course in spoken Korean. Module 1 gives you the script, the sounds, and the sentence engine; Module 2 puts that engine to work in real situations. The course is pattern-based: Korean sentences are built by attaching pieces — particles after nouns, endings after verbs — in a strict order, so a small number of patterns, learned properly, generate a very large number of true sentences.
You read Hangul from the first concept. A small set of letters combines into syllable blocks, and each block is one syllable of speech: learn the letters and the combining rule and you can read any Korean word aloud, whether or not you know what it means. The sound changes between syllables — final consonants and liaison — are taught as rules, not exceptions.
Then you build sentences and use them. Greetings and introductions at one held level of politeness, the sentence skeleton with the verb at the end, being and existing, real questions, and both number systems — native for things, people, ages, and hours; Sino-Korean for money, dates, minutes, and phone numbers — each in its proper place.
Module 2 works in real situations. Schedules, movement and place, food, shopping, polite requests, past and future, the politeness system as a deliberate choice, talk for family, school, and work, and the small talk that opens and closes a conversation gracefully — the exchanges a beginner actually faces, handled without switching to English.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The First-Visit Speaking Script, the exact Korean for a Korean-speaking family's first visit to a school, from the door to the goodbye-for-today; and The Welcome-Evening Speaking Plan, a complete welcome evening hosted in Korean, level-labelled throughout.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. This is a speaking foundations course: it does not teach literacy beyond Hangul basics, it is not exam preparation, and no score or certificate level is promised. Casual speech is taught for recognition only, never production; the romanization is a crutch for the first weeks only, and Hangul is always primary.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Korean for Beginners: Start Speaking from Day One is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what your eyes did with Korean writing before, which of your own places you most want to read, how you learn shapes — and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the script you only think you can read.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The First Visit for Module 1 and The Family Welcome Evening for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Sound before sense. You read Hangul from the first concept and trust your eyes over the romanization: blocks, vowels, consonants, and the sound changes between syllables — kept alive every time a later concept hands you a new word in Hangul first.
Module 1 builds the sentence engine. The skeleton with its particles, being and existing, questions, and the two number systems that feed the engine — a small set of patterns, learned to mastery, generating your sentences instead of memorised dialogues you cannot take apart.
Module 2 builds the real exchanges. Schedules, directions, ordering food, asking prices, making polite requests, talking about yesterday and tomorrow — and choosing your speech level on purpose, because in Korean politeness is not decoration, it is grammar.
And it leaves you two performances. A complete first visit and a complete welcome evening, each spoken in Korean from greeting to goodbye — on the book's ground first, then on your own.
What you will learn
- Read any Korean word aloud from its Hangul spelling, including the sound changes that occur between syllables.
- Greet, introduce yourself, and open a conversation at the correct level of politeness.
- Build statements and questions from the core sentence patterns, with the verb at the end where Korean puts it.
- Count in both Korean number systems, and know which system a given job — money, dates, ages, hours — belongs to.
- Handle the beginner's real exchanges: schedules, directions, ordering food, asking prices, making polite requests, and talking about yesterday and tomorrow.
- Choose between the formal polite and informal polite levels on purpose, recognise casual speech without producing it, and use the honorific forms owed to elders and guests.
- Carry a short, real conversation — the kind Grace needs at her office door — from greeting to goodbye without switching to English.

Built for true beginners with real people to greet
Heritage learners — who grew up hearing Korean at the kitchen table, understand more than they can say, and want production to catch up with comprehension.
Partners, in-laws, and travellers — joining a Korean-speaking family, or determined to do more than point when they travel.
Professionals whose work meets Korean speakers face to face — teachers, coordinators, clinicians, and service staff. No prior language study is assumed; if you already read Hangul fluently or hold full conversations, this course is below your level and says so plainly.

Before you enroll
What is a Socratic coaching session?
A conversation, not a video. Your coach asks a question; you answer — out loud by voice, or by typing — and the coach responds to what you said: naming the misconception it hears, affirming what you got right, and asking the next question. You advance only when you have mastered each concept, so a finished course means the learning held.
How long does it take — and how long do I have?
About 30 minutes per concept. Learn in sittings of any length; your progress is saved as you go. You have a full year from purchase to finish, and you can revisit and retake within that year.
What does the certificate verify?
That you completed every concept and both capstones of this course. Anyone can confirm a Cognosco certificate online — enter its certificate ID on our verification page.
What if it isn't for me — what are the refunds?
If you have not started, cancel for a full refund within seven days of purchase. Once you have started, there is no cash refund — stop before finishing and we credit the full amount you paid toward any other course in the library (credit valid one year from your original purchase). Once you complete the course, no refund or credit applies.
