Leading Shift Teams

Signature Course No. 77 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Leading Shift Teams course, in the Frontline & Industry Leadership category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for newly promoted shift leads and supervisors — strong on the work itself, new to owning the boundary — who discover that a good shift run badly handed over becomes the next shift's bad shift, experienced supervisors in round-the-clock operations — manufacturing, warehousing, healthcare support, hospitality, utilities, and processing — whose shifts run well alone and badly together, with each shift certain the problem wears another shift's name,

night and weekend shift leaders — who run the operation when the building is emptiest and support is thinnest — and who are tired of inheriting surprises and returning work nobody downtown ever sees, and operations managers responsible for several shifts — who set the standard all shifts claim to share — and who suspect the standard is really three standards, kept by three teams that rarely meet.

It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — The Relay, Not the Silo: The Handover, the Written Record, and One Standard Across Shifts — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Boundary Done Right; then, Module 2 — One Team Across Shifts: Trust, Visibility, and Change That Holds on Every Shift — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with One Team, In Writing.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Boundary Done Right and in One Team, In Writing. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.

The course is self- paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This course teaches general leadership information only. It is not safety advice, not regulatory advice, and not a substitute for your employer's procedures. Where a handover, a staffing decision, an escalation, or any other practice in these pages touches safety, quality, care, or compliance, your employer's procedures and the applicable regulation govern — always, and without exception.

This course will teach you to communicate earlier, record more accurately, escalate more honestly, and lead more fairly across shifts. It will not tell you what your operation's safe staffing level is, what your industry's reporting rule requires, or what to do in an emergency. Those answers live in your workplace's own procedures, and a shift leader who improvises past them in the name of leadership has misunderstood both jobs. The standards a shift works to are set by the employer's procedures and the operation's leadership — not negotiated shift by shift.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a boundary done right, from the inheritance read to the honest escalation, and your written shift standard, witnessed — not just ideas about teamwork.

This course prints no statistics, names no studies, and invents no figures — no handover-error rates, no incident figures, no outcome percentages, and no invented statutory citations.

This is the seventy-seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Own the Outcome → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Own the Outcome

The Coach starts where the work begins — at the boundary, in the nine minutes when one shift hands the operation to the next and decides whether the incoming team starts running or starts recovering. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Boundary Done Right for Module 1 and One Team, In Writing for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Most shift problems are blamed on the shift where they are discovered. The morning finds the mess, the evening inherits the backlog, the night works around the fault nobody logged. Look closer and the failure is rarely inside one shift. It is at the boundary between them — in a handover that was rushed, a record that said less than the writer knew, a standard that changed with the light, a gap that was softened instead of escalated, a grievance carried for weeks instead of spoken in a day.

This course teaches leadership at that boundary. You will learn what a shift actually inherits, how to run the handover conversation and write the record that survives it, how to hold one standard across every shift, how to know the realities of shifts you do not lead, and how to say early and plainly what is short, what went wrong, and what the next team needs.

You will then learn the second half of the work: ending blame between shifts, making the invisible shift visible, developing leads on every shift, rolling out change so all shifts meet the same new way, and handling conflict with the shift before yours directly.

By the end, you will have a written shift standard of your own — the commitments you will lead by when the next team walks in.

  • Hold one standard across all shifts, and know the realities of the shifts you do not lead
  • End blame between shifts, and handle gaps, trouble, and conflict directly and honestly
  • Make every shift visible and developed, and roll out change so all shifts meet the same new way

Who It's For

Built for the practitioner who runs one leg of a race the whole operation is running

Leading Shift Teams is for newly promoted shift leads and supervisors — strong on the work itself, new to owning the boundary — who discover that a good shift run badly handed over becomes the next shift's bad shift, experienced supervisors in round-the-clock operations — manufacturing, warehousing, healthcare support, hospitality, utilities, and processing — whose shifts run well alone and badly together, with each shift certain the problem wears another shift's name,

night and weekend shift leaders — who run the operation when the building is emptiest and support is thinnest — and who are tired of inheriting surprises and returning work nobody downtown ever sees, and operations managers responsible for several shifts — who set the standard all shifts claim to share — and who suspect the standard is really three standards, kept by three teams that rarely meet.

The course assumes you lead people who hand work to other people, and that what you hand over matters as much as what you do. It starts where the working shift leader actually is: my shift does its job. Why does the work still fall between shifts?
