Learning to Learn
Signature Course No. 30 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Learning to Learn course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for any professional who has to get good at something new — a system, a tool, a body of knowledge, a role — and has discovered that effort alone is not producing retention. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — The Mechanics: What Actually Builds Skill — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Two-Week Build; then, Module 2 — The Practice: Learning on Purpose, at Work — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The New Role. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Two-Week Build and in The New Role. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self- paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fences, stated plainly. This book teaches study method — techniques of practice — and nothing more. Nothing here claims to rewire, reprogram, unlock, or enhance a brain. Nothing here is a cognitive-enhancement program, a memory treatment, or a substitute for instruction in the subject being learned. The techniques are taught as practices that the evidence associates with better retention and more durable skill — never as guarantees. No technique in these pages is promised to work for every learner, on every subject, in every week of a working life. And where the field's beloved folklore fails the evidence — most prominently the doctrine of learning styles, and the slogan version of the ten-thousand-hour rule — the book names the source that examined the claim and retires the claim rather than building on it. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete two-week build for a real deadline, and a six-week campaign plan with a readiness statement for a real new role — not just ideas about learning. This course teaches study method as practical craft, with every research claim named and attributed, and no invented figures.
This is the thirtieth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Own the Outcome → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Own the Outcome
The Coach starts where the work begins — in the definition of learning itself. Learning is a change in what you can do, produced by how you practice — and most inherited study habits produce familiarity instead: exposure credited as knowledge, until the day the performance is demanded and the knowledge is not there. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Two-Week Build for Module 1 and The New Role for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most adults study the way they were taught to study in school, and most of it does not work. They read and re-read. They highlight. They watch the session twice and feel the warm familiarity of the second viewing and mistake it for knowledge. Then the day comes — the new system goes live, the certification exam opens, the customer asks the question the manual covered — and the knowledge is not there, because it never was: familiarity is not retention, and exposure is not skill. This course replaces that inherited method with a deliberate one. It teaches the small set of practice techniques that research on learning consistently supports — retrieval practice, spacing, worked examples, interleaving, and feedback, used in combination and on a schedule — and it teaches the disciplines around them: choosing a target worth learning, designing practice sessions that stretch without breaking, starting on time instead of eventually, learning from people as well as from material, retiring old ways that block new ones, transferring classroom gains to the live job, resting in a way that serves retention, and measuring progress by evidence rather than by feeling.
What you will learn
- See your own learning clearly — distinguish familiarity from knowledge, recognize the study habits that feel productive and are not, and judge what you actually know by testing rather than by feel
- Practice with the methods that build durable skill — retrieval practice, spacing, worked examples, interleaving, and timely feedback, combined into sessions designed on purpose rather than inherited by habit
- Control the conditions learning depends on — focused attention in a distracted workplace, a reliable way of starting, other people used deliberately as teachers and mirrors, and rest treated as part of the schedule rather than what is left over
- Carry learning into the job, and keep it for good — a written plan for a real skill, old ways retired where they block new ones, practice arranged so it transfers to live work, progress measured against evidence, and a standing personal system you can point at the next skill — including every other course in this catalog

Built for the practitioner who has to get good at something new
Learning to Learn is for any professional who has to get good at something new — a system, a tool, a body of knowledge, a role — and has discovered that effort alone is not producing retention. It is for the experienced worker facing reskilling who studies hard and keeps little; for the newly promoted manager learning a discipline nobody taught her; for the specialist whose field has moved and who must move with it; and for every learner about to take another course in this catalog, who will get more from it with this method in hand.
The fences apply here, too. It assumes no background in psychology or education. It assumes one thing only: that you have, or can choose, one real skill you genuinely need to learn. The course is practiced on that skill from Concept 1 onward, and a learner without one will be asked to choose before proceeding — the method cannot be learned in the abstract, because the method is the practice. It does not teach you to perform familiarity as knowledge, to count hours as progress, or to trust a method because it feels productive. It starts where the working learner actually is: something new must be learned, effort alone is not retaining it, and the next practice session matters. What will I be able to do — and how will I prove it?
