Measuring Learning Impact: Prove What Learning Changed at Work

Signature Course No. 237 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Measuring Learning Impact: Prove What Learning Changed at Work course, in the People, Culture & Engagement category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

Every learning program makes the same silent promise. People will work differently afterward, and the difference will matter — yet almost none of them is ever asked to keep that promise in public, and the question “did it work?” is answered with attendance counts, satisfaction averages, and hope. This course teaches you to ask rigorously, fairly, and in a way that survives a skeptical finance director.

You learn to design the measurement before the results exist. Start from the decision, not the metric; read the famous evaluation levels as lenses with limits, not as a ladder of proof; build the chain of evidence link by link; take baselines, observe behavior where work actually happens, and design the comparison — a waitlist, a matched group, a staggered rollout — that turns a hopeful story into an argument.

Then you learn the harder half: proving it fairly. Tell correlation from cause, subtract what would have happened anyway, respect sample size and noise, count costs fully including people's time, and compute value without folklore — no inherited return figures quoted as fact, ever.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Start With the Change: What Counts as Impact — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Bramley Measurement Plan; then, Module 2 — Prove It Honestly: Attribution, Value, and the Report — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Bramley Impact Report.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Bramley Measurement Plan, a one-page measurement plan for Bramley Insurance's Clear Claim program, with its chain of evidence, locked before launch; and The Bramley Impact Report, the complete impact report on that program's real results — executive summary, evidence appendix, and an honest cost-and-benefit statement — written to be defended in front of the people who paid for it.

The honesty discipline is part of the course. Attribution is stated as hard, because it is. An honest null result is taught as a win of method, not a failure to hide. Level models are lenses, not ladders. And every worked figure in the running case is a stipulated teaching figure, stated once and used consistently, so you can recompute every number yourself.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Measuring Learning Impact: Prove What Learning Changed at Work is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. Nobody funds learning — they fund changed work and better results — so measurement starts by naming the change. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Bramley Measurement Plan for Module 1 and The Bramley Impact Report for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

What You'll Learn

A claim is an argument, not a headline. A before-and-after difference is a fact; the claim that learning caused it has to be built — decision first, chain link by link, comparison underneath — and reported at exactly the strength the evidence supports.

Module 1 teaches you to design the measurement. The decision and its threshold, the levels as lenses, the chain of evidence, baselines and targets, behavior observed in the wild, outcomes that can move, comparison as the argument, instruments that tell the truth, and the one-page plan that locks it all before results arrive.

Module 2 teaches you to deserve the verdict. Rival explanations hunted, the counterfactual subtracted, uncertainty respected, costs counted fully, value computed without folklore — and the report written honestly for every audience, dashboards included.

And it builds the standing habit. Reporting nulls as wins of method, filing every result where the next designer will meet it, and re-reading scaled programs — a measurement system that lets an organization learn whether its learning works.

What you will learn

  • Frame the measurement: start from the decision, use the levels as lenses, and build the chain of evidence from learning to results
  • Measure the change: baselines, targets, observed behavior, business outcomes, comparison groups, and honest instruments — locked into a plan written before results arrive
  • Prove it fairly: separate correlation from cause, subtract what would have happened anyway, respect noise, and count costs and value without folklore
  • Report it honestly and keep it going: null results reported as wins of method, audiences served without spin, dashboards that do not lie, and a standing measurement habit

Who It's For

Built for people who must prove learning worked

Learning and development professionals — designers, managers, and measurement leads — who are asked “did it work?” and want an answer better than attendance.

People analytics and HR professionals — who inherit learning data and must judge what it can and cannot support.

Managers who commission learning, and consultants and facilitators — who sign for programs and want to know what their signature bought, and whose clients deserve evidence, not testimonials. The course assumes no statistics beyond ordinary business arithmetic; it assumes you have access, or can get access, to a real program and its workplace data, and that you would rather know than be told it worked.
