Memory, Focus & Speed Reading

Signature Course No. 174 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Memory, Focus & Speed Reading course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for professionals who must master new material fast — a new role, a new product line, a new regulation, a new client — for knowledge workers drowning in reading, who need to triage documents honestly, for people who present, examine, or decide from memory, and for anyone who would rather improve by a real margin they can prove than by a spectacular margin they cannot.

It works in the order the skills build — first, Module 1 — How Memory Works, and How to Make It Work — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Material You Must Command; then, Module 2 — Attention and Reading at Full Honesty — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Focused Week of Reading.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Material You Must Command and in The Focused Week of Reading. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Recalling a procedure aloud and defending a reading plan are spoken acts, and retrieval spoken aloud is retrieval all the same.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

You measure the result yourself, on your own material: how fast you read, at what level of understanding, for which purpose — your rate always reported against your comprehension, never rate alone, with comprehension scored by what you can produce, not by what feels familiar.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete encoding and review plan for a real body of professional material, and a focused work and reading plan for a real week of document load — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.

This is the one hundred and seventy-fourth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the three gates every memory must pass. You do not have a bad memory. You have an unexamined one — most of what you call forgetting never got properly stored in the first place. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Material You Must Command for Module 1 and The Focused Week of Reading for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Your professional life runs on three quiet capacities you rarely examine: you must remember what you learn, you must attend to one thing long enough to do it well, and you must read — reports, briefs, proposals, procedures, correspondence — faster than the pile grows, without fooling yourself about what you actually understood.

Most professionals were never taught how any of the three works. They re-read documents and call the familiarity learning. They keep six things open at once and call the exhaustion effort. They skim a brief the night before a meeting and call the skim reading.

This course replaces those habits with techniques grounded in how memory and attention actually work. You will learn the three stages every memory must pass through, why forgetting is normal and often useful information rather than failure, and the deliberate encoding moves — association, elaboration, chunking, spatial placement, spaced review — that give material a way back.

You will learn retrieval practice: the finding, replicated often enough to teach with confidence, that pulling material back strengthens it more than looking at it again.

You will learn what switching costs you, how to design a session and a workspace that protect attention, and how to work in one lane at a time.

And you will learn to read in three modes that must never be confused — previewing, skimming, and full reading — plus the modest, honest techniques that raise a full-reading rate without quietly spending comprehension to buy speed.

What you will learn

  • Explain how memory works — encoding, storage, and retrieval — and diagnose where a given failure happened
  • Encode deliberately using association, elaboration, chunking, and spatial placement
  • Use spaced review and retrieval practice to make learning durable
  • Protect attention: cut switching costs, design focus sessions, and work single-tasked
  • Read in three distinct modes — previewing, skimming, and full reading — and choose the mode by the job
  • Raise your full-reading rate modestly with better fixation habits, text chunking, and pre-questions
  • Measure your own memory and reading honestly — rate against comprehension, never rate alone

Who It's For

Built for the professional who must remember, attend, and read well

Memory, Focus & Speed Reading is for professionals who must master new material fast — a new role, a new product line, a new regulation, a new client — and cannot afford the illusion of having learned it, knowledge workers drowning in reading — analysts, managers, consultants, reviewers — who need to triage documents honestly: map some, gist some, and fully read the few that carry decisions, people who present, examine, or decide from memory — anyone who must walk into a room and command names, figures, procedures, and arguments without notes doing the remembering for them,

and anyone who wants techniques that survive measurement, and who would rather improve by a real margin they can prove than by a spectacular margin they cannot.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course. It assumes no background in psychology. It assumes only that you have real material to remember, real work that needs your attention, and real documents to read — because every exercise in the course runs on material of exactly that kind.
