Microsoft 365 & Office Essentials
Signature Course No. 158 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Microsoft 365 & Office Essentials course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for office staff and administrators who produce the documents, decks, and messages an organization actually runs on, managers and team leads whose reports, owner packets, and board decks must be readable, current, and right, professionals moving into a Microsoft 365 workplace who need the durable moves rather than a tour of every button, and small-business owners and operators who are their own IT department. It works on one running company — Larkspur Property Group, a property management firm with 240 units, 14 owners, and 18 staff — whose monthly owner packet, lease renewal letters, and Monday inbox you will come to know in full.
First, Module 1 — The Three Crafts: Documents, Decks, and the Working Day — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Owner Packet; then, Module 2 — The Connective Tissue: Files, Sharing, and Working Across the Suite — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Renewal Campaign. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Most office work does not fail at the hard parts. It fails at the ordinary ones. The tools are not the problem — Microsoft 365 and the Office apps are capable, mature, and, used with a few durable disciplines, genuinely fast. What most people were never taught is the disciplines themselves.
This course teaches the disciplines. Choose the app by the job. Build structure before appearance. Make the deck argue and the mail ask. Keep one canonical file, fit the sharing to the job, and check the current state of the tool and the file before you trust a remembered path.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete monthly owner packet, report, deck, and transmittal built whole, and a renewal campaign workflow of shared files, templates, review, and meetings — not just ideas about office work.
This is the one hundred and fifty-eighth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with your own files. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what you already do well in the suite, and where the common trap is waiting for you — and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Owner Packet for Module 1 and The Renewal Campaign for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most office work does not fail at the hard parts. It fails at the ordinary ones: a report nobody can navigate because its headings are just bold text, a deck that stores the presenter's notes instead of making the audience's decision, an inbox run as an archive, a calendar run as a suggestion, and a shared folder containing eleven files all named "final."
The tools are not the problem. Microsoft 365 and the Office apps are capable, mature, and — used with a few durable disciplines — genuinely fast.
The problem is that most people were never taught the disciplines; they were handed the apps and left to improvise, and improvisation, repeated daily by a whole team, becomes chaos with good software.
This course teaches the disciplines. Module 1 builds the three crafts: the structured document, the argumentative deck, and mail and calendar handled as commitments.
Module 2 builds the connective tissue: one canonical file instead of competing copies, permissions chosen on purpose, clean hand-offs between apps, templates and review workflows that hold up under pressure, and the standard you check before anything leaves your hands.
One small company — Larkspur Property Group, a property management firm with 240 units, 14 owners, and 18 staff — runs through the whole book, because office discipline is not an abstraction: it is what happens to the monthly owner packet, the lease renewal letter, and the Monday inbox, every week, on a deadline.
What you will learn
- Choose the right app for the job, and structure Word documents with real headings and styles
- Build documents that survive editing — sections, page furniture, and clean hand-offs to PDF
- Build PowerPoint decks that carry an argument, with visuals that prove instead of decorate
- Write mail that gets answered, and run an inbox and calendar as systems, not archives
- Share files without version chaos — one canonical copy, deliberate permissions
- Work across the apps cleanly, reuse work through templates, and review without losing the thread
- Finish to a standard: accessible, findable, and checked before it is sent, shared, or presented
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Microsoft 365 & Office Essentials, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Owner Packet and The Renewal Campaign
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the people the office runs on
Microsoft 365 & Office Essentials is for office staff and administrators who produce the documents, decks, and messages an organization actually runs on, managers and team leads whose reports, owner packets, and board decks must be readable, current, and right, professionals moving into a Microsoft 365 workplace who need the durable moves rather than a tour of every button,
and small-business owners and operators who are their own IT department and need file, sharing, and review practices that survive staff changes.
This course assumes you can open the apps, type, and save a file. It assumes no prior instruction in styles, deck design, or inbox systems. The rest is built here, concept by concept, on one company you will come to know very well.
