Mobile App Development Foundations

Signature Course No. 193 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Mobile App Development Foundations course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you.

It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work on one running project alongside the Coach throughout: RosterReady, a shift-swap app for small cafés, whose complete project card — screens, build estimate, schedule, price, and launch numbers — is stated once and used for the whole course, so every figure you meet can be checked against its source.

This is the course for professionals who will commission a first app — owners, managers, and project leads who must brief a developer or an agency — and for professionals who will build a first app with support, product-minded colleagues who sit between users and builders, and anyone deciding whether an app should exist at all.

It works in the order the work itself runs: first, Module 1 — Anatomy of an App: What It Is Made Of — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Foundation Plan; then, Module 2 — Building, Shipping, and Keeping It Alive — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Ship-and-Sustain Plan.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Foundation Plan and in The Ship-and-Sustain Plan. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

A mobile app looks simple from the outside — a few screens, a few taps — and that appearance is the most misleading thing about it. Underneath every calm screen sits a small system: an interface someone designed, a state the app is holding, data it stores on the device and data it fetches from a server, permissions it must ask for and duties it owes, and a release process that puts it into a store and keeps it alive there.

You learn the system at foundations depth: what an app is made of, how to scope a first version small enough to ship, how to choose between native, cross-platform, and web approaches as a decision rather than a fashion, how screens and navigation fit together, how local data and sync behave when the signal drops, how an app talks to a server, and what permissions and privacy duties really require.

Then you will build and ship in literacy: accounts and sign-in, interface components and accessibility, testing on real devices, reading crash evidence, store submission and review, versioning and updates, the arithmetic of store fees and running costs, maintenance and iteration, and finally the craft of planning or commissioning a build.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete foundation plan a developer could price and a sponsor could sign, and a ship-and-sustain plan covering testing, submission, release, costs, and maintenance — not just ideas about apps.

This is the one hundred and ninety-third course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you already understand about how apps work, what you have only taken on trust, and where the common trap is waiting for you. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill — by applying the concept to a fresh situation, not by reciting it. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Foundation Plan for Module 1 and The Ship-and-Sustain Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

An app is not a small website and not a shrunken desktop program — it is a three-layer system that lives in someone's pocket and must behave well when the world interrupts it.

This course teaches you that system at foundations depth — interface, state, and data — on one running project, RosterReady, a shift-swap app for small cafés with 7 screens and a build estimate of $35,500, stated once in full and used for every later calculation.

First, the anatomy — trace a user action through interface, state, and data, scope a first app to a shippable core, and choose a platform approach with reasons that survive challenge.

Then, beneath the surface — state, local data, the server conversation, and sync that behaves honestly when the signal drops, with permissions and privacy duties stated plainly.

Last, the shipping disciplines — testing on real devices, reading crash evidence, store submission and review, versioning and updates, the arithmetic of store fees and running costs, maintenance and iteration, and the brief a developer can price.

What you will learn

  • Explain what a mobile app is made of — interface, state, and data — and trace a user action through all three
  • Scope a first app to a shippable core and defend what is cut
  • Choose between native, cross-platform, and web approaches for a stated situation, with reasons that survive challenge
  • Design screens and navigation a first-time user can follow without instruction
  • Plan local storage, server communication, and sync that behave honestly when the connection fails
  • State the permissions and privacy duties an app carries, and design requests a user can understand
  • Test on real devices, read failure evidence, and judge whether a build is ready to submit
  • Plan a store submission, a release, and the maintenance that follows — with the costs worked out in the open

Who It's For

Built for the person who will plan, build, or commission a first app

Mobile App Development Foundations is for professionals who will commission a first app — owners, managers, and project leads who must brief a developer or an agency, judge an estimate, and accept or reject the result without being able to write the code themselves, professionals who will build a first app with support — capable generalists who want to prototype and ship something small, with a mentor, a framework, and honest limits, product-minded colleagues — people who sit between users and builders,

and anyone deciding whether an app should exist at all — because the most expensive app is the one that should have been a web page, a form, or nothing.

The course assumes programming literacy: variables, loops, functions, and reading short code listings without panic — the ground the earlier programming-literacy courses in this program cover.

It assumes no prior mobile experience, no design background, and no store account. It does not aim to make you a professional developer, and it says so wherever the boundary matters.
