Negotiation Mastery: The Principled Playbook
Signature Course No. 184 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Negotiation Mastery: The Principled Playbook course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for operations and procurement leads who renew supply, service, and logistics agreements on which the whole business quietly depends — for managers who negotiate for budget, headcount, deadlines, and internal resources with colleagues they must keep working with on Monday — for owners and founders who face landlords, key suppliers, and partners across the table — and for project and account leads who negotiate scope, timelines, and change requests, where the agreement has to be lived under, not just signed.
It works in the order a real negotiation runs: first, Module 1 — The Method: Interests, Options, and the Walk-Away Arithmetic — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Preparation Dossier; then, Module 2 — The Process: Design, Drafting, Hard Moments, and Agreements That Hold — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Negotiation Plan and Closing Package.
One negotiation carries the whole course: Frosthaven Packaging Co., a fictional maker of compostable food packaging, renewing its annual film supply contract with Northlake Resins — 10,000 cases a year, with the walk-away economics built once, in full, and used unchanged in every concept and both capstones, so every figure you meet can be checked against its source.
Your walk-away point becomes arithmetic: you will build your best alternative and cost it whole, assess the other side's alternative honestly, derive the line where agreement and departure weigh the same, and map the zone where a deal can live — before you meet, not in the room under pressure.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Preparation Dossier and in The Negotiation Plan and Closing Package. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete preparation dossier for the Frosthaven renewal, ready to take into the room, and a full negotiation plan and closing package for the same renewal as it hardens — written to be usable on the real job, not just in the course.
This is the one hundred and eighty-fourth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the difference between a position and an interest. A position is a demand; an interest is a reason — and most negotiators cannot yet state their own interests cleanly, let alone the other side's. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Preparation Dossier for Module 1 and The Negotiation Plan and Closing Package for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most working agreements are not won or lost in a single dramatic meeting. They are ground away, a little at a time, in renewals nobody prepared for, in scope arguments nobody framed, in price talks where the first number said out loud owned the room, and in corridors afterwards, where the real objections finally surface.
This course teaches you to negotiate those ordinary, consequential agreements on principle: by a method you can state out loud, defend in writing, and repeat on the next negotiation without depending on mood, talent, or who raised their voice last. You will learn to look underneath a stated position for the interest that produced it — on both sides of the table. You will learn to keep the relationship and the problem in separate hands, so that firmness on the merits never has to become hardness toward a person.
You will learn to invent options before you divide value, to anchor agreements in standards neither side controls, and to build — and honestly assess — your best alternative to a negotiated agreement, so that your walk-away point is arithmetic rather than bravado. Then you will learn the process craft that makes the method hold under pressure: designing the negotiation before it starts, setting agendas and ground rules that survive contact with a difficult counterpart, drafting as you go, trading concessions instead of leaking them, recognising hard tactics without mirroring them, handling the honest case where no agreement should be reached, and closing in a way that still works six months later, when the signatures are dry and the deliveries are due.
What you will learn
- Distinguish positions from interests and negotiate the interests on both sides
- Separate the people from the problem while staying firm on the merits
- Invent options for mutual gain before dividing value
- Anchor agreements in objective criteria neither side controls
- Build your BATNA and assess both sides' alternatives honestly
- Set reservation values and map the zone of possible agreement before you meet
- Trade concessions with discipline instead of giving them away
- Design the negotiation process — agenda, ground rules, and drafting
- Recognise difficult tactics and answer them inside the method
- Close agreements that hold through implementation — and walk away well when no agreement should be made

Built for the person who carries the renewal
Negotiation Mastery: The Principled Playbook is for operations and procurement leads — who renew supply, service, and logistics agreements on which the whole business quietly depends, and who need those renewals to be methodical rather than theatrical, managers — who negotiate for budget, headcount, deadlines, and internal resources with colleagues they must keep working with on Monday,
owners and founders — who face landlords, key suppliers, and partners across the table, often with no one else in the room to check their walk-away judgement — and project and account leads — who negotiate scope, timelines, and change requests with clients and partner firms, where the agreement has to be lived under, not just signed.
Every concept is taught as a practised move and proven on a fresh situation: interests excavated on both sides, alternatives built and costed, a line derived and governed, and the process designed so the substance gets its chance.
This is a Communication & Influence course. It assumes you already negotiate as part of your work. It assumes no legal background and no prior formal study of negotiation — if you can follow a set of figures and write a clear paragraph, you have everything this course requires to start.
