Negotiation Skills
Signature Course No. 36 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Negotiation Skills course, in the Business Development category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for everyone whose work runs on agreements — professionals whose jobs run on scope, deadlines, budgets, and terms settled with people outside their direct control, managers who negotiate upward for budget and headcount and outward with vendors and partners, founders and owners for whom every negotiation is personal, and anyone who has walked out of a negotiation wondering what just happened and what they gave away. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Before the Table: Know Your Interests, Know Your Walk-Away, Know Their World — name negotiation as agreement rather than victory, separate positions from the interests underneath them, find your own interests first and rank them, build your walk-away alternative and read theirs honestly, map the other side's world of constraints and authority, inventory everything actually on the table, plan the conversation, and write your limits down — target, floor, and what you will not do — finishing with The Prepared Table; then, Module 2 — At the Table: Open Honestly, Trade Don't Give, Close in Writing — open with a framing both sides can accept, make the first offer anchored in facts, learn at the table through questions and listening, build offers as packages, trade every concession instead of giving it away, meet hard moves and impasse without lying, caving, or escalating, test the agreement before you shake on it, and write it down the same day — finishing with The Signed Page. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Prepared Table and in The Signed Page. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fences, stated plainly. This course is distinct from Signature Course No. 3, Conflict Resolution: that course resolves friction between people; this one reaches agreement on terms. Conflict Resolution teaches de-escalation, mediation, and the repair of working relationships. This book teaches none of that. Do not bring mediation tools to a terms problem, and do not bring bargaining tools to a wounds problem. And negotiation in this course is ethical dealing only: no deception, no bluffing with lies, no exploiting weakness. You will not learn to lie about your alternatives, invent a competing offer, manufacture a deadline, hide a material fact, or take advantage of a counterpart's mistake, ignorance, or distress. Strong, prepared, honest negotiation is the whole method of this book — strength from preparation, never from tricks.
This is the thirty-sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Prepare
The Coach starts by examining how you get ready for the table — whether your interests are named and ranked, your walk-away built, and their world mapped, as things stand. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Prepared Table for Module 1 and The Signed Page for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Almost everyone who works negotiates — the salary and the start date, the vendor's price and delivery terms, the scope of a project and who owns which piece of it. Most people do it unprepared: they walk in with a number, defend it, concede toward the middle, and walk out unsure whether they did well or were handled. This course teaches negotiation as a learnable, honest discipline. You will learn to prepare by separating what people ask for from what they actually need, to know your walk-away alternative and read the other side's world, to open and frame the conversation well, to make and answer offers as packages, to trade concessions instead of giving them away, to work through pressure and impasse without deception, and to finish with an agreement tested, written down, and built to hold — because at work, you usually have to live with the other side afterward.
What you will learn
- Prepare for a negotiation by naming interests, alternatives, and limits
- Open and frame a negotiation honestly, and make offers that move it forward
- Trade concessions instead of giving them away, and work through impasse
- Reach agreement, write it down clearly, and protect the relationship afterward

Built for anyone whose work runs on agreements
Negotiation Skills is for professionals whose jobs run on agreements — scope, deadlines, budgets, responsibilities, and terms settled with people outside their direct control — managers who negotiate upward and outward at once, founders and owners for whom every negotiation is personal and consequential, and anyone who must reach agreements at work: prepare for a negotiation by naming interests, alternatives, and limits, open and frame a negotiation honestly, and make offers that move it forward, trade concessions instead of giving them away, and work through impasse, and reach agreement, write it down clearly, and protect the relationship afterward.
The fences apply here, too. This course reaches agreement on terms; it is not a course in resolving friction between people, which is Signature Course No. 3, Conflict Resolution's work. And the dealing here is ethical only: no deception, no bluffing with lies, no exploiting weakness — no invented alternatives, no manufactured deadlines, no hidden material facts.
